Today we’d like to introduce you to Jai Nokes.
Hi Jai, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story started with daily affirmations and prophecies from my parents. Since I can remember my parents would say I was meant to do something great in the sports world. They weren’t specific with what they thought my involvement would be in sports but they knew I would do something impactful whether it was playing or doing what I do now which is working in sports media.
Their belief in me led to me taking a leap of faith in 2014 when I got my first opportunity to appear on radio with the BGC Sports Network out of Dallas TX and that led to my first journalist assignment covering the Men’s basketball program at SMU.
At the time I was just wanted to focus my time on radio and getting better at that, but that changed when the owner of the BGC Sports Network noticed one of my articles, so at that time I decided to cultivate both of my talents and build my own radio show and also find a way to improve my portfolio in writing.
I have done a total of 5 different podcast projects and have wrote for blogs, newspapers, and established publications. But what has gotten me to the point I am at now is never being fearful of failing and also taking many leaps of faith despite not knowing where I may fall.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been a bumpy road but I wouldn’t change it or trade it. The sports media industry is not kind to most and myself and colleagues I know all share similar stories which is what brings most of us together.
The biggest struggle I had was consistency and commitment which I think many people struggle with. As the old adage goes “you make time for what’s important” and when I began my career, like many people I thought the bare minimum would be just enough and I didn’t have to be consistent because I didn’t have a clear vision and I was just putting the pieces together as they came. I found out the hard way that wasn’t the best route to get to success or fulfilling my dream of working full time in media.
I always knew where I wanted to be but I struggled with finding the appropriate road map to get there and once I began to apply myself and remain committed and consistent, doors began to open for me and now I am here.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I currently host my own live sports radio/podcast on facebook.com every Tuesday at 7PM called NOTES X NOKES and I write for D210SPORTS and covered my favorite childhood basketball team the Dallas Mavericks for them as well. I am also an insider for the professional football league the XFL which I began covering last year before the league folded but I continue to report on news when it’s happening for the league.
I specialize in radio/podcast hosting, writing, video & podcast editing which I learned on my own through trial and error.
I used twitter to build a following by reporting XFL news. I started with 58 followers in Fall 2019 and presently I have over 1400 followers on twitter which is how I built my name in the sports media industry.
The proudest moment I’ve had was getting to cover the Dallas Mavericks for the 2020-2021 season and getting some camera time to expand my experience. I was just a writer but getting the opportunity to get some camera time helped me realize that I would like to get some more camera time in the future and it looks like I will if I continue to practice and sharpen my skills.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I am not a person who is really full of surprises. What you see is what you get. I am always energetic, talkative, and as positive as I can be for the most part.
I don’t know if this is worth noting but, I am not a fan of bananas or peanut butter and I can’t stand the smell or sight of either.
