Check Out Lyndsay McLeod’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyndsay McLeod.

Hi Lyndsay, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up, I didn’t have a lot of exposure to herbal medicine or natural remedies in general. It wasn’t until I was studying abroad in Peru that I really fell in love with the idea of herbal medicine. We were walking through the market in Cuzco and our guide pointed out a woman sitting on the floor surrounded by plants. He told us that people would come to her with their ailments, she would then give them the herbs they needed and have them return in a couple of days to check on their progress. It was in that moment that I fell in love with herbal medicine. I started making elderberry syrup for my daughter when she was quite young. I took her to the doctor when she spiked her first fever and because it was viral, we were told it needed to run its course.

As a mother, I really just wanted to give my child something that would give her some relief. The elderberry syrup worked beautifully and I believe shortened the duration of her symptoms. All of my products are inspired by my children. My youngest had quite a hard time learning how to fall asleep as a baby. I tried everything with her that I tried with my oldest and nothing worked. I formulated the Drift Away Drops to help soothe her at bedtime but nobody was more surprised than me when they worked as well as they did. It was such a relief! I really believe plants are magic. I started my business after one of my neighbors asked to purchase my elderberry syrup. I had gifted her a bottle when she was ill and she loved it so much she wanted more for her friends and family. We grew organically and quickly from that point. I think it’s safe to say we are now the Austin areas favorite elderberry syrup.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
All in all, I think it has been a relatively smooth road. Of course, there are the day to day struggles every business owner goes through. Making sure we have enough product in stock, keeping up with social media, responding to customer questions, shipping orders and other things here and there are all in a day’s work. Throw in running a household while wrangling my two little ones and you’ve got one tired Mama/entrepreneur. Thankfully I have surrounded myself with the amazing people who help ease the load. My sister has been a lifesaver. She created pretty much everything you see on the outside of the bottle as well as built the website. She is very talented. My dad also helps me at my farmer’s markets and let me tell you, he is a customer favorite! People go out of their way to contact me just to let me know how much they love him. And of course, my husband has been an amazing help. The day to day support from him has been unwavering.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’d like to say I’m known for my quality, transparency, and authenticity. When I started Respect Your Elderberries, I knew my main goal was to offer quality products that people can trust. I would never offer anything to my customers that I wouldn’t give to my own children. I believe in plant medicine but I am under no illusions and that it is a one-size-fits-all solution. My customers know I am going to be straightforward with them on whether or not a product would be beneficial for them and I believe it’s part of the reason they allow me to contribute to their families wellness. The product I am most proud of has to be the Shut The Cough Up Syrup and Drops. I formulated it when my little ones were sick and the elderberry wasn’t doing enough for their cough. It would keep them up at night, which made it harder for them to get better. None of the over the counter products I had tried was working so, of course, I just had to come up with my own. It has saved us from many sleepless nights and thankfully our customers can attest to that as well.

If you look at the ingredients of some of the “natural” products you find in stores, you’re going to see some less than desirable ingredients, I don’t know about you but when I am taking a wellness product, I want every ingredient to be good for me. You won’t find any stabilizers, thickeners, preservatives, artificial colors or flavors. We use elderberry juice instead of dried elderberries which results in a more nutritious and fresher tasting syrup. I am lucky that one of my best friends is a pharmacist so I always check with her about any contraindications my formulas may have. I think it is a combination of all of these things that sets me apart.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Herbal wellness is growing in popularity and if these past couple of years has taught us anything, it is that we must take care of ourselves and our health on a daily basis. Elderberry is one of the oldest natural remedies around and has proved its worth through the years. In fact, one of the best things about the popularity of elderberries is that it has opened people’s minds to the idea of herbal medicine. If this works as well as it does, what else is out there. The answer is, “So much!” Natural remedies are no longer solely for plant-loving hippies such as myself, Herbal medicine belongs to everyone and I think that is such a beautiful thing.
