Community Highlights: Meet Allison Jaffe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Jaffe.

Hi Allison, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As an Austin award-winning interior designer, I’m ecstatic about the opportunities to collaborate with homeowners and create spaces where they feel most self-expressed. My gift lies in being able to intuitively tune in their vision so I can understand their unique needs and wants for a space.

I didn’t start out in the design world. In fact, I first excelled in the sciences, pursuing a degree in Neuropsychology from the University of Pittsburgh. After graduating, I worked for contract furniture group, which is where the idea of studying in the field of interior design first sparked. One day, I found myself admiring plans for an office and loved how it all flowed and came together. As I looked down at the lines that created the rooms, I could see how the space was a perfect puzzle, a problem to be solved and I wanted to solve it. I knew in an instant, like a bulb going off in my head, that interior design was a path I had to follow.

From there, I pursued a second degree to graduate Magna Cum Laude in Interior Design from Texas State University. Through my schooling, I quickly realized that in addition to my inclination toward solving problems, my perceptive read on people made for the special “sixth sense” so integral to smart design.

Along with the distinction of being a Texas Registered Interior Designer #11043, I also hold a membership in American Society for Interior Designers.

Beyond my work as an interior designer, I like to experience a variety of activities this beautiful life has to offer, from circling the globe to faraway destinations like Cuba, Australia and Morocco, as well as skydiving with my friends as a licensed hobbyist skydiver on the weekends. I’ve noticed that when I align myself with joy in my personal life, that same energy and openness shows up in my work, giving my clients a positive transformative experience in their homes.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my biggest challenges that I’ve had to overcome in business was not found in the external but sourced from within. In 2016 after six years of being in business, I about ran my company straight into the ground. I didn’t sign a client for eight months and I was nearing the end of my savings.

What attributed to this near collapse was nothing short of lost confidence within myself due to something that I couldn’t manage in my personal life. And clearly, I allowed it to seep into my business. As an entrepreneur, I truly believe a self-started company is an extension of one’s self. So if one area is out of alignment, the impacts are felt everywhere.

Eventually, after three years of rebuilding the courage and trust within myself, a sprinkling of grit, tears and head-knocking confusion, I was able to turn the ship around. It was hard work mentally but what kept me going was the love and joy I received and experienced everyday from the act of transforming the spaces of others.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Since founding its founding in 2010, Allison Jaffe Interior Design has been honored with 23 interior design awards, and the greatest feelings come from all the kind testimonials left by happy clients.

For three years running, Allison has been recognized as an “Austin Under 40” finalist and, Austin CultureMap dubbed her “a star to watch right now.” Since 2018, Allison has been ranked at the top of the list as the “Best Interior Designer in Austin” by Austin Architects. Her work has been featured in both regional and national publications such as Austin Monthly, Austin Women Magazine and K+BB Magazine.

“Our holistic approach to designing your spaces comes with the understanding that one room speaks to the next to create a fluid conversation throughout the home.”

Reaching far beyond the scope of paint colors and throw pillows, we consider each project’s unique specifications such as new construction or demo plans and discovers both the potential and limitations of existing floor plans. Maximizing storage, streamlining flow and accenting each space with just the right amount of light brings a sense of ease to the way our clients live in and use their homes. And making a lot of small decisions at once can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to creating and implementing a cohesive design from room to room. Whether you are moving into a new home or reinvigorating your current one, AJID is here to help hone in on the furnishings, finishes and fixtures that reflect who you really are and how you want to feel in your space.

How do you think about luck?
I don’t subscribe to the constructs of luck or coincidence, instead I’ve built a strong foundation around the practice of living a life of integrity. My success has been created by me and my actions alone which in turn have and are producing incredible results that show up in both my personal and professional life.

When something I want doesn’t show up, I know it’s because I’m not in action about it or there’s a limiting belief stopping me. So as a business owner, I am always seeking to surround myself with friends, coaches and mentors that can keep me accountable when I cannot. It’s been a wild ride but each of the tangible or intangible milestones I’ve accomplished is honored and no doubt has me reaching for more.

So with that said…who’s ready to roll the dice.
