Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Lawson.
Hi Corey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Where to start. My two passions have always been fitness & helping people in any way possible. But fitness was just a hobby for most of my life. I was always the active friend who everyone leaned on for exercise & diet advice. In fact, I was even hosting free bootcamps all throughout my senior year of college at UT. Just for fun. Fast-forward to post grad.. my free bootcamps were still happening every Saturday when a friend told me to get certified and turn my passion into a side-hustle. Before our conversation, I’d never considered the possibility of earning money through fitness. Long-story short: I then spent two years of balancing a full-time corporate job + building Claw Athletics on the side, until the business was strong enough to support me full-time. Now I’m coaching one on one & online clients full-time, with hopes of bringing back our bootcamp in the Post-Covid world!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
LOL… No. From 2018-2019 –> I built the business while working a full-time corporate job. My “work” weeks would generally average 80+ hours between the two “jobs”. During this time, I also had my business bank account involuntarily closed, and spent countless nights wondering why I’d even attempted this journey. Not to be forgotten, I was also ridiculed by (old) friends for striving to build my company… I’ll never forget being asked if I’m “still doing that little fitness thing” in front of other people at a party. 2020 –> Oh 2020. I’d quit my corporate job in January with a goal of building the city’s best bootcamp. Had NO idea a global pandemic was two months away. Fortunately, I was able to pivot towards running a more digital/virtual business and stay afloat. But spring of 2020 brought the most terrifying anxiety attacks of my life. 2021 –> Our best year ever. Now the “problem” is remembering everything mentioned above & using it as fuel to continue pushing the envelope further. Good problem to have.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Claw Athletics, LLC?
Our company views health as a life-long journey, NOT an eight week sprint. We don’t create Instagram challenges, we don’t push crash diets, we don’t post four week transformations, etc. We believe that our work with clients is ONLY effective if it is sustained beyond our time together. This is why we dedicated more time to educating clients on exercise, nutrition, sleep, and hydration.. and it’s why our primary focus is habit creation. Because with great, sustainable habits, our clients are able to achieve and sustain their desired results forever. Speaking of clients, we coach based upon a simple phrase, “Health Coaching Fit to YOU.” Every client is treated as a unique individual. This means that every detail is taken into consideration. What is this client’s career? What are her goals? What is his background in strength training? Does she travel on weekends because she’s a consultant? Does he work on his feet all day because he’s a nurse? Etc. Every human is unique. Your approach to health & fitness must reflect that.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Most – The people! Moving to Austin at 19 years old, I was shocked by how active the people of Austin are. I’d never lived in a city where exercise was COOLER than partying. Not only that, but we have the kindest & most collaborative people in America living in Austin, Texas. Least – Traffic! But that’s the cost of living in a great city.
