Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Knight.
Hi Megan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a 29 year old fitness instructor from Austin, TX. I was born in St. Louis, MO and moved to Texas at age eight. My story really starts at age 15 when my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Growing up, I never had a good relationship with my father so when he passed at age 16, it changed the course of my life. I searched for meaning in men. Attaching myself to boyfriends and starting all kinds of crazy diets because my looks became my source of worth. This lasted ten years. In the meantime, I moved from Texas to New York and received a bachelor’s in fashion merchandising. I later took a job at Tommy Hilfiger in Manhattan only to shortly realize this career wasn’t what I wanted to do with my life. After two years, I took a leap and auditioned to be a spin instructor at Love Cycling Studio in Austin, TX and got the job! Moving to Austin is when my transformation started.
My ex of 4 1/2 years and I broke up after buying a house and almost getting married all broken parts of myself started to surface. I checked myself into outpatient rehab for my eating disorders and started therapy. Over the course of two years, I started the process of healing. Dealing with the pain in my head and heart. Building my confidence and growing myself. After a period of being single, I fell in love again and started to be able to focus on growing my career now that I was in a better place in my heart and head. I started studying to become a personal trainer and was voted one of the three best spin instructors in Austin (now four years running.) The story continues, I separated from that love after another painful break but continued to work on myself and improve my heart, which meant going back to therapy for my anxiety disorder and my PTSD from my father’s death. This is an ongoing struggle but through the years of change, I learned hard things won’t break you. They change you.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
NO! No path to success is ever smooth. The best life challenges I’ve had are my father’s death, my anxiety disorder and PTSD, & 2 very painful breakups. Currently, I am in the middle of another painful life change, but this time instead of begging for the pain to stop and running I’m leaning in and trying to see what the pain is begging from me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a spin instructor and personal trainer. I specialize in women’s strength training but I’m the most well known for being a spin instructor. What sets me apart is my class is like a rave/therapy session rolled into one. I lay out my struggles in the hopes someone else can grow and connect from it. I hope by sharing my heart with my clients that it can save one heart from breaking or just brighten one person’s day.
What were you like growing up?
As a small child, I was goofy. Very hyper and loud. I was picked on in middle school and was the little girl that beat up boys on the playground (oops!) As I got into my HS years, I became an “emo kid” as I was dealing with my father dying. I’ve always been very high energy and upbeat!
