Daily Inspiration: Meet Paul & Nancy Person

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul & Nancy Person.

Paul & Nancy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Windmill Meadow Farm specializes in fresh-cut, locally grown flowers in the Fredericksburg area. Our love of fresh flowers and the impressive cut-flower arrangements we saw on our travels to Europe inspired us to establish Windmill Meadow Farm, named for our restored 1886 wooden windmill when we retired to Fredericksburg. We began with a small garden plot and quickly ran out of space so expanded the farm to one acre of specialty flowers. Fredericksburg, as a popular tourist destination, has many B&B’s, inns, restaurants, and other attractions which make up our market for customized floral arrangements.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Farming is year-round hard work. Even in the winter, we are ordering seeds, preparing and planning our next season’s plantings. We start all our plants from seed under lights so timing and patience are basic requirements in our business. Our Hill Country location on limestone rock meant we needed to bring in 60 truckloads of loam and garden soil. Considering Texas weather we have to be prepared for just about every extreme from heat and drought to cold, freezing weather. We don’t use pesticides or chemicals so there’s always a challenge keeping bugs and weeds out.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Fresh and locally grown flowers are the heart of our business. And that is what sets Windmill Meadow Farm apart from flower shops where the flowers are often shipped in from long distances. We found the best way to market our flowers is through custom arrangements. Our arrangements are sophisticated yet stylishly casual in jars and vases we select ourselves and make sure to fill those vases with mostly European flower varieties which give our arrangements a specialty look that is hard to duplicate.

We especially enjoy sharing the farm with visitors and educating our clients about flowers. Our arrangements are delivered for a special occasion, through our subscription service or at the Farmer’s Market in Fredericksburg. Farm tours and floral workshops are popular as treats for a birthday, friend’s weekend, or other celebrations.
