Hidden Gems: Meet Helen Sharp of Be Influential Public Relations

Today we’d like to introduce you to Helen Sharp.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always been a social person with a flair for storytelling and connecting with people. My husband says I’m hyper-social, and I use that as a superpower to fuel my public relations business!

I was a complete nomad in my twenties, living in Taiwan, Argentina, Los Angeles, and Chicago. I wrote for various local magazines and worked remotely as an in-house PR person for a tech company in San Francisco.

In 2017, I took a job with the reusable straw company, FinalStraw, which brought my love for the Earth and my knack for Public Relations together. During that time, many companies and influencers asked me to run their Public Relations strategy, so after a year, I started my agency, Be Influential, in April 2018.

Now, 2.5 years later, I have seven incredible eco-friendly clients, two full-time employees, and a handful of contractors.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The struggle for many first-time entrepreneurs is knowing how to get started. In the beginning, I said yes to every potential client that approached me. I was not looking at the interview process with a potential client as a two-way street. I didn’t ask myself if they would be a good fit for me and my vision for Be Influential.

Your work-life takes up most of your day, so it became vital for me to choose to work with positive, intelligent people. Since I was building something that was my own, I became very focused on creating the ideal agency — dedicated to the planet with personal relationships with my clients.

The second biggest struggle hit when Hitch hired me to help launch their business in February 2020, followed by the global pandemic. It was a confusing time, no one knew how to move forward, and there were no right or wrong answers.

The founders decided to launch Earth Day in April with the original, upbeat, and creative pre-pandemic campaign. It was the right decision — the campaign was so successful that Hitch became the most funded bottle in crowdfunding history, raising $2 million.

Be Influential secured an incredible amount of press for Hitch during the campaign from Inhabitat, Wired, Mashable, Politico, and Trend Hunter, to name a few. We secured this without sending out a single sample, which led to an uptick in sales and unwavering social proof for the campaign.

We’ve been impressed with Be Influential Public Relations, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Be Influential is gaining a reputation in the eco-friendly space for strategic thinking, creativity, and expert media relations, along with superior client service and our innovative approach to practicing public relations, partnerships and influencer marketing.

Be Influential was founded under the philosophy of aggressive media outreach through various channels and building strong journalist relationships. We operate on the principle that strategic public relations require a thorough understanding of the media.

We specialize in helping our clients achieve their business objectives by strategically monitoring and impacting the news cycle. We know how to craft a story to suit the media outlet; we are always searching for the unique idea, the different angle, and the fresh take on a story.

We are strategists and storytellers using our passion and deep knowledge of our client’s industries and the media landscape to deliver coverage well beyond the typical news stories. We are focused on providing results that impact our clients’ businesses and are driven by our ability to create connections between our clients and the audiences important to them.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I’ve found a few great mentors on I also recommend asking someone that you look up to in your industry. You’d be surprised at how much people want to help each other.
