Today we’d like to introduce you to Hailey Gonsoulin.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Fashion has always been a huge part of my life. Going back to when I was very young, shopping estate sales and clothing boutiques with my mother and grandmother, who are a huge inspiration to me and my career. Dressing up in the most interesting pieces was always my thing which made me quite unique in a small town of less than 30,000 people. Growing up in New Iberia, Louisiana I yearned to live in the big city and pursue my love for fashion. My dream came true at the age of 20 when I was accepted to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and studied Fashion Merchandising & Management. During my four years in college I learned from so many knowledgeable professors who worked in the industry which prepared me for my journey. I also had the opportunity to study in Italy for a semester which really opened my eyes to a broader spectrum of the fashion industry and the world. After earning my Bachelor’s Degree I had the opportunity to work with several extraordinary fashion companies which eventually landed me a position as an Associate Buyer at Barneys New York. During my years at Barneys I worked closely with several incredible designers and learned from the best mentors.
After living in New York for over a decade I decided to make a change and move to Austin, Texas. I made the decision after visiting friends and realizing how much I needed to slow down and live an easier lifestyle. The last ten years in Austin have been quite a ride. I’ve worked in many roles for several boutiques but always knew that I wanted to pursue my dream of opening my own business. When the pandemic hit I was laid off from my previous employer due to the circumstances. This gave me a chance to actually focus solely on a business plan and pursue my goal as an entrepreneur. I’ve always had a strong appreciation for vintage and antiques. I’ve collected many vintage clothes, accessories, jewelry and antique home goods throughout the years. Most of these pieces were just sitting in storage and I felt that they needed to be in a new home where they were appreciated and loved. I instantly started my business venture by selling these pieces online which attracted quite a few clients. After I knew I had a pretty good following I then began taking buying trips from state to state shopping estate sales, vintage auctions and consignment stores. From then on I knew this was what I was destined to do. I have learned so much not only about vintage but myself through this process and I hope to continue to grow and learn more in the future.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
With every business there are struggles and I feel that I have definitely run into a few obstacles. For one it has been a bit of a battle from time to time to find the funds to support Adornment. Since I am the only employee I have to do everything which can be very challenging. I hope one day to be able to hire a team that I can count on to help me with keeping track of inventory and managing the online store. I am currently doing everything; steaming and cleaning merchandise, researching inventory, pricing and photoing the products, and uploading images to the web store. If I had the help it would be so much easier for me to focus on other areas that are needed such as networking to build a broader clientele. I am hopeful that one day I am able to get to that place where I can acquire a dependable staff that I can count on and eventually open an Adornment store front.
I also would like Adornment to be recognized as an environmentally conscious company. It has been a bit of a struggle finding the right products that fit into that category even though every piece in the shop is secondhand. I try my best to look for environmentally friendly fabrics such as organic cotton, linen, hemp and lyocell. I also source authentic vintage pieces that were produced before the year of 2000. It’s sometimes a struggle to find these pieces but I’m always up for the challenge.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Adornment?

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I always wanted to be the center of attention. I loved everything from dancing, singing and fashion. My parents definitely had a handful but kept me busy by enrolling me in dance classes and other activities that they knew would pay off in the long run. As I mentioned before, I was always into fashion. My mother used to let me dress myself at a young age because she was confident that I knew exactly how to coordinate my outfits even though every once in a while I would throw in something extra. Through my high school years I never followed trends. I was very confident about who I was and where I wanted to be in life. I always loved meeting new people and interacting with others. I feel that this has definitely molded me into who I am today and helped me succeed throughout my life and career.
