Inspiring Conversations with JCN Farms

Today we’d like to introduce you to JCN Farms.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We want to bring sustainable, renewable, and new green methods of agriculture that help foster the planet and ensure food security for the future. We always knew we wanted to be entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs that facilitate change and impact society for the greater good; this aspiration was the start of our company. The story stems from our love and appreciation for the environment and the fresh foods (fruits, vegetables, plants in general) it provides. We wanted to find a solution that could help decrease our carbon footprint, improve people’s lives, and give back to our environment. These ideas shaped our company’s story and purpose: to bring healthy, affordable, and sustainable food to our local Austin communities. Comparatively, commercial farms attest to one of these goals, but the industry limits itself to the available land and resources for cultivation.

The commercial farming sector also immensely harms the environment through numerous agricultural practices, and consumers are unaware of the countless pesticides used on their products. These are enormous concerns for us and our company, so we started our vertical farm to reduce the space and resources such as water and land needed for cultivation. Attesting to our start-up and goals for the vertical farm, we have complete climate control for year-round production. All our products are organically grown, ensuring extraordinary freshness for all consumers. Lastly, by growing our products vertically, we can fasten the plant’s growing cycle, maintain high consistency while supplying demand; we also have infinite space by growing upwards, allowing for more outstanding production of goods than commercial farms. We want to implement innovative agricultural solutions that will help protect and give back to the environment while improving and adding value to the people in our community’s lives.

So far within our journey, we are having the time of our lives! We have found a niche market that we are all extremely passionate about, which drives us to work harder every day. We maximize our productivity and time as college students by focusing on growing our business as well as ourselves. With the creativity of ideas and ambitions ignited, JCN Farms’ operations in 3-5 years will be fully sustainable, primarily autonomous, create jobs, and powered by renewable energies and resources. With all the unused renewable energy, we plan to have it recycled back into the farm or back into the city of Austin. All products will be grown indoors and harvest in the heart of the city, packaged and sealed, then delivered straight to your door as well as to local retail stores. Ensuring fresh, all organic, and high-quality, nutrient-dense products. This story is just the beginning of JCN Farms.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like all start-ups, it has not been the smoothest road; there are always constant struggles and challenges that need solutions, but that’s the essence of an entrepreneur. The challenges we face the most are finding new innovative agricultural solutions that will help differentiate our farm from the others. As capital is limited in the beginning stages, we have to become creative and work with what we have. The next challenge is managing our time or finding the right balance between our business and school. As collegiate athletes, managing your time is essential, so we have had to create strategies and make time-consuming sacrifices that help grow our business (no complaints here).

In the early stages of our business, we experimented with finding what works best for us and our products. There were tons of trial and error, but we found and still find solutions to these challenges day by day. And lastly is finding a solid customer base and educating people on microgreens. This has been imperative for us, and we must educate people on why they should be consuming microgreens while attempting to secure a sale simultaneously. These challenges are growing pains and offer incredible experiences for us. For every no, there’s a yes, and for every setback, there’s a lesson to be learned. We motivate each other every day, and that’s a crucial solution to solving any challenge.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
JCN Farms is a vertical farm whose mission is to bring healthy, affordable, and sustainable food to the local Austin communities. As of now, our farm exclusively grows and specializes in microgreens. Microgreens are young, miniature plants that take 8-10 days to grow. If left to grow, they would become full-sized vegetables. These micro-vegetables contain 40-100 times more nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes than their mature full-sized counterparts. Microgreens are essential to our health because they increasingly help prevent cardiovascular diseases, cancers, decrease harmful cholesterol levels, strengthen the immune system, increase vision, improve hair/skin health, and many other functions! The benefits of microgreens speak for themselves, and they can drastically change the healthy eating market and the infamous “American diet.”

As a company, there are unique factors that differentiate us apart from the others. First is our ambition to give back to our communities and the environment through our products and sustainable agricultural methods. Second, we do harvest-day delivery to ensure freshness and exceptional quality. With our harvest-day delivery method, we are harvesting our customer’s products the day they receive them. This personalized service is highly beneficial for our customers because they receive ethically grown products that do not travel hours to get to their plates. Our production methods truly give our customers the experience of knowing who and where their produce is coming from, living to the standards of “farm to table.” The next differentiator is our age.

Although we are considerably younger than our competition, our awareness and desire to help the environment and our local communities are the company’s driving factors. Aligning with age, our familiarity and creativity with modern and new innovative technologies are second to none; implementing, designing, and learning on the go is essential to this growing market, so being adaptable to any change is crucial. Lastly is our customers’ satisfaction; we put our customers first, and we want to bring their lives remarkable value and an unforgettable experience through our products’ naturalness and genuine flavor. We cater to our customer’s wants and needs by developing trust, transparency, honesty, and support through care, notable consistency, and continuous feedback on our microgreens products.

We are incredibly proud of the company JCN Farms is molding into; as all companies start, it is just an idea. You must run with it and continuously grow and feed it to achieve the primary purpose of the starting idea. We are proud to have delighted customers who are incredibly supportive and charismatic about our products and visions, which has been the most reassuring and rewarding process of starting JCN Farms.

For our Austin, Texas readers, we want them to know that JCN Farms locally grows organic microgreens that are non-GMO, pesticide-free, and provides the vast majority of nutrients that your body needs! We also deliver to you! Our job is to serve our customers, give back to our communities, and educate people on microgreens, the healthiest superfoods on the planet! Again, our mission is to bring healthy, affordable, and sustainable food to our local Austin communities. Austin is where it starts, but eventually, JCN Farms will help provide developing nations with a multitude of produce and vertical farms to help mitigate the absence of food and resources and increase their overall food security.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Since the start of our company, we have learned many lessons regarding starting a business, and more importantly, about ourselves. The biggest takeaway so far is believing in your product, the company, and your capabilities. It’s easy for us to compare ourselves to others constantly, and as human beings, it’s normal for competitive nature to arise. But it has been imperative for us to believe in ourselves, our products, ambitions, and vision for the company while eliminating external and internal limitations.

We found that working hard, staying motivated, and facilitating creativity for innovation for our future is what keeps us going. How can you grow your business and your ambitions if you keep listening to the negative opinions of others? We have found that anything is obtainable if you truly believe in your company and the culture it creates. As long as we work hard and put in the hours together, we can achieve our micro-goals first, which will help get us closer to our long-term goals. We can’t let other people define our work ethic or business; those factors are entirely up to us.
