Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Buller.
Hi Kelly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When my son was born 5.5 weeks early, my entire world shifted. Suddenly, my focus was around him and having the very best for him in every way. I knew I wanted to leave my 9-5 career life and have more flexibility to be with him on my own schedule. I also knew I wanted the very best and safe from harmful material products for him. He inspired me to start Austin Baby Collection, which I did on nights, weekends, and in the pump room at my office job.
Soon after I decided to start the brand, we had our first meeting with Target corporate. Eight months later, in the midst of the pandemic, we launched in 1,000 Target stores nationwide (August 2020). From there, we launched our E-Commerce in December of 2020 and have been grinding ever since!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, nothing smooth about it. My Dad always reminds me, you have to be comfortable with the uncomfortable as an entrepreneur. You ride the highs and you ride the lows, it’s quite the rollercoaster. We’ve had our fair share of lows and then we get up again, because we have to, and we just keep going.
Some of the struggles include bank wires missing, the constant need for cash flow, hard lessons as a new business that you keep learning, and surprises. There are always surprises. It’s how to rise to the occasion during those struggles that can define your success.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Austin Baby Collection?
Austin Baby Collection is a children’s brand, lovingly named after the city we call home. Our children’s mealtime products are inspired by the spirit of Austin; they maximize function, they’re eco-conscious, a bit whimsical, and always fun. Our products are ideal for on-the-go families.
As a new mom, and like all parents, I sought to find thoughtfully designed, environmentally friendly products that were accessible and affordable. I didn’t have much luck, and that’s when the idea for Austin Baby Collection was born.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My Dad has been in the CPG space for, as he says, more than 30 years and less than 100. He has served as a mentor for me every step of the way! I am constantly learning from and inspired by his entrepreneurial spirit and experience.
