Life & Work with Erica Collins Johnson Brittni Johnson of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Collins Johnson and Brittni Johnson.

Hi Erica and Brittni, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Erica Collins Johnson:

I’m originally from Dallas, and I’ve moved around quite a bit alongside my Husband as he coached collegiate football. After moving back to Austin, we decided to make this the city home. We have two children, and we knew this is where we wanted to watch them grow up. Like most people during the pandemic, I started to question whether or not I was truly fulfilled in my role as a stay-at-home mother. The answer is yes, absolutely! Watching my children grow and being a part of their everyday lives is a blessing. My daughter is ten years old, and as we encourage her to excel in school, we’ve also made it a point to foster her entrepreneurial spirit. And that made me think; Maybe I should take my own advice. As not only a woman, but a woman of color, I want to role model that same spirit for both my daughter and my son. Building a brand new business has allowed my husband and me to step into nontraditional roles with our everyday responsibilities. I am so thankful that my husband has wholeheartedly embraced and championed the opportunity to support me in a complete shift of my career focus.

What’s even better is I’ve gotten to go on this journey with a friend. Brittni is my business partner. She and I met through our Husbands, both former University of Texas football players and roommates. We’ve always enjoyed entertaining and creating beautiful experiences for our friends when hosting or attending gatherings. One night while messaging back and forth, we decided to launch LUX Boards.

LUX Boards has afforded us the space to create and spread joy through our charcuterie boards.

Brittni Johnson:

I was born and raised in Kansas City which is where I met my husband. Once my Husband retired we moved back to his home state of Texas to raise our young family. My Husband prides himself in making me a “Texas Girl”. I can honestly say that I’m not mad about it! I am absolutely in love with Austin and couldn’t imagine a better place to raise our family. We are a beautiful blended family of 8! We have 5 rambunctious boys and a precious babygirl. After settling in and making my own relationships, I found myself wanting to build something in Texas of my own. Alongside of Erica, I also share a love for wine and cheese. We both love to entertain and we couldn’t be more thrilled to grow that love into LUX Boards. We like to say LUX Boards is “where luxury meets the palate”.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Erica:

Like most companies, we’ve definitely experienced our fair share of bumps along the road. But, we’d say the best thing about launching a business during the pandemic was that we scaled up in a vacuum, so to speak. The world was shutting down and we were launching a business. We’ve even had an opportunity to reevaluate that balance between work and home life, and restructure our business as we slowly transition back to “normal life.” It has truly been amazing watching our business grow. We started out serving family and close friends. We quickly moved into creating for the greater Austin area. The response has been so positive and we are beyond thankful for all of the LUX Love!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Erica:

Our team is dedicated to curating a unique experience that our customers can enjoy anywhere. We are self-taught creators who took the time to research and perfected our craft. Our friends and family became a little community of critics and helped us to discover what it takes to make a Board visibly beautiful, but most importantly, what it takes to make it taste amazing. There is so much love that goes into each LUX Board. Our goal – create Boards that not only speak to your palate, but also feed your soul. Each board has its own twist; no two are alike! We love that our customers trust us to create for them. And while we do create custom options however it’s rare for us to receive those types of orders. We’re proud to say our customers trust our vision, and we are able to create for them freely.

What makes you happy?
Erica:

Happiness is LUX Boards! We are two women who emerged ourselves into caring and growing our families and though we have no regrets, we also leaned into our value as Black Women and role models for our children. Tapping into our creative side and rediscovering what makes us happy was paramount in creating our business. We feel so blessed teaching our babies to tap into their own creative sides. When they add hard work and determination they too can make a career out of doing what they love. Are hearts are full knowing we are teaching our little’s that it’s never too late to take a leap of faith.
