Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Shavon Mariah Brooks.
Dr. Brooks, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Northern California and relocated with my family to Buda, Texas during high school. I always had a passion for helping others and I always knew I would like to be in the medical field as a child growing up. I always was surrounded by success and determination so I knew anything I wanted to do I could do it. The mental health field was always interesting to me, just being in the hospital setting and meeting new individuals was a career path that I wanted to explore and grow in.
In the Mental Health field, I started Shavon Mariah Social Services, P.A, and Shavon Mariah Social Services luggage Foundation – 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization in 2020. I am a practicing Licensed Behavioral Health Social Worker/Psychotherapist, Board Certified Human Service Practitioner and National Certified Anger Management Specialist II. I have completed my PHD in Medical Social Work and defended her dissertation on the Adolescent’s Perspective on Social Media Contributing to Suicidal Ideations and Attempts. I’m currently being Clinically Supervised by Sarah Kincheloe, LCSW-S, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Board-Approved Supervisor, on completing my 3,000 hours towards obtaining my LCSW. I completed my High School teaching degree, Bachelors of Sociology with a minor in Psychology from Huston-Tillotson in 2013, started my Masters of Social Work at University of Texas in San Antonio but, relocated to Walden University and completed my Masters in Advanced Clinical Social Work in 2018 and my PHD in Medical Social Work in 2021.
My experience started in the social work field for ten plus years, working and volunteering at various children shelters during undergrad, was employed with Child Protective Services and currently working as a Medical Behavioral Health Social Worker/Therapist in the surrounding Austin Area and Psychiatric Behavioral Health Hospital. I completed my Masters in Advanced Clinical Social Work internship as a Clinical Social Worker at an acute Psychiatric Behavioral health hospital in Austin, Texas. I currently conduct educational and processing groups at the Psychiatric Behavioral Health Hospital, individual and family sessions with children and adults as well as completing intake and follow-up assessments, discharges and establishing community resources for clients as an in office and in the field Behavioral Health Social Worker/therapist.
In the Real Estate Field – I am sponsored by JBGoodwin Realtors since 2020 and is a member of Austin Board of REALTORS®, Texas Association of REALTORS®, Williamson Country Association of REALTORS®, The American Association of Notaries and licensed to practice Real Estate in the State of Texas. I have obtained my Texas public notary in 2021. I always had a passion for Real Estate and helping others. I decided to pursued my Texas Real License after realizing there is a gap in the lack of knowledge about ownership of property with individuals in the community and the lack of motivation to be able to own their own home. I came into this career field to make a difference and if there is no need to own a home there is a need to rent. No matter if you are renting or buying the place where you call Home is somewhere where you should be proud to return to every day. I received the Top leasing agent from JBGoodwin Relators in March 2021. My mission is to help those buying their first home, rental property, vacation home or renting a home until their next steps in life are figured out. There will always be a need and a place to call home and that is why I have invested into Real Estate.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest challenge for me was trying to get through school and passing my state exams to be able to practice therapy. I was working 40 hours a week, attending school full-time and trying to complete my internship at the behavioral health hospital for my degree requirements. This was occurring all at the same time as trying to study for my state exams. I would go to work Monday through Friday 8 am- 5 pm and then go straight to the behavioral health hospital until 9 pm some nights. I would often turn around and come back on the weekends to the hospital to get ahead on my hours before the school quarter was over. Time Management was my biggest challenge due to not having enough time to get everything completed, as well as trying to balance my social life. At the end of the day, I knew my main goal was opening up my own Private Practice and that’s what kept me going each day and night.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
