Meet Gilbert Sanchez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gilbert Sanchez.

Gilbert, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The ending of March 2020 is when I started to take action towards building a platform I had been wanting to create for a couple of months before. Just like everybody else, when the pandemic first started, I had the time to put towards podcasting. I always knew I wanted to create something where I could provide value to the world and shine light on people that are doing big things within the city, I just never knew what. Then I stumbled upon podcasting and everything just clicked.

I first started off interviewing my close friends and family to get myself out of my shell because I have always been intimated by being on camera or putting myself on social media. A few months of posting consistently on social media and different podcast platforms, individuals started to reach out to be on the podcast. These individuals ranged from business owners, musicians, other podcast hosts, artists, the list goes on.

With something that started in my second bedroom of my apartment would then turn into having a podcast studio at the beginning of the summer of 2021, is still all surreal to me. More times than not, I think about how crazy it is that people want to come onto a platform that I created and tell their story. Moreover, I sometimes have to sit back and tap into present time and remind myself that this is what I wanted.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This has definitely not been a smooth road for me. The biggest struggle was I used to be super attached to results. I would always ask myself “why doesn’t this podcast episode have this many downloads” or “why doesn’t this YouTube video have this many views” but then I started to detach myself from the results. I’ve learned that when you detach yourself from results that’s when everything gravitates towards you. I convinced myself that whatever I’m chasing is going to happen when it happens. I just let the universe take the wheel.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Other than podcasting, I currently run a sneaker business. I focus on highly sought-after sneakers that I can resell for high profit based on demand. I started this business four years ago but went full-time when the pandemic first hit and never looked back. One of the hardest parts of owning and running a business is learning the legality side of things. There are so many rules and regulations that a business can thrive off or that could be ruined by so figuring out which way to handle certain tasks was a struggle at first.

The thing I’m most proud of is facing most of my fears. I have one left and that’s skydiving, but we’ll get there soon. People will go their whole life being afraid of doing something that will bring freedom, happiness and create financial stability. I understand why people are scared and it’s because you never know if that one thing is going to work out or not. That’s why I’m always taking risks even if I know it might not work because the time it does, I know I made the right choice. Plus, I would rather live with an “Oh well” then a “What if?”.

Podcasting has been around since the early 2000’s but in my opinion has become more popular within the last five years. Even though most people don’t know what a podcast is, over time more and more people are becoming familiar with this medium.

Creating this platform and separating myself from others comes from me just wanting be the guy that came in and made podcasting a staple within the city. I want to make people that have no idea what a podcast is, recognize that podcasting is another medium that is only going to become bigger. All while doing this, I hope I could create another side of podcasting that people will fall in love with. When I’m successful with this opportunity, I hope people see that you don’t have to be resigned to the highway and you could create another path while other people drive straight.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me, success grows from bouncing from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm. When you lose your enjoyment of life after failures, you lose. I’ve always said the only way you lose in life is if you quit. If you don’t quit then you’re far better off than the person next to you.

I never really been intrigued by monetary means because I know what it feels like to not have a lot of things and honestly, I’m super fortunate to be raised that way. People always define success with the amount of money one has but truth is everybody definition of success will always be different. Plus what’s money if you can’t share that with your family and close friends. When I’m 99, or whatever age I’m at, on my death bed, I want to confidently say I did all the things that mattered and didn’t do the things that didn’t matter.
