Meet Megan Bucknall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Bucknall.

Hi Megan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up on the outskirts of Austin and graduated from The University of Texas with a PR degree. Shortly after graduating, I moved to Los Angeles and began a career in Healthcare working under the marketing department at LA Children’s Hospital. A few years later, my career took me to New York City where I began working at Mount Sinai Hospital at the Children’s Environmental Health Center. Working in Healthcare was extremely rewarding. In NYC, I began using my own photography skills to elevate our social media/email and other marketing collateral. In 2018, I then made the leap into the startup industry, again getting to use my photography passion there also. Fast Forward to 2019, my husband and I moved back to Austin and I began working for a startup in the hospitality industry. Once Covid hit, I left the startup to focus on some personal projects, one included my marketing/photography skills. I began offering free services to small/ local companies here in Austin that were impacted by Covid. I met some amazing people, Courtney from Brittle Babe (whose delicious brittle is now on the shelves at HEB!) Carlos from Rosarito who serves the best tacos and ceviches, to meeting Jen from Nuts So Sweet, an organic food company who donates 80% of their profits to Austin Disaster Relief Network. I originally created the @OdetoAustin account simply to practice my photography and revisit old Austin memories and discover new ones. I never really expected to form it into a business. I guess my advice is follow what makes you happy 🙂

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m not a trained photographer. I didn’t go to school for it. A lot of it has been getting out there and learning. My biggest obstacle is definitely myself. I can doubt myself out of gigs feeling that I don’t have enough experience. As an entrepreneur, believing in yourself is everything. Luckily my sweet husband usually gives me the push I need.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a marketing person at heart and I use photography to create content that tells a story. I specialize in capturing Austin places, people, and things. I love offering my services to young, local companies that are just getting started. One of the things I’m most proud of is when I see my work out in the wild. I upload tons of free images that anyone can download and use on Unsplash and most recently, I licensed one of those images to a new Austin hotel which will surely be a dream seeing my images up in that space!

I’m also excited and proud of the launch of my print shop which you can find on my website! ☺️

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Start even if you don’t know how. It’s never too late to start something new or do something career-wise that you didn’t go to school for. Teach yourself, believe in yourself and use the environment around you to inspire you. Austin has always been a creative city and one that will always inspire me.
