Rising Stars: Meet Margaret Peterson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret Peterson.

Hi Margaret, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have always had a love for flowers and an entrepreneurial spirit but if you’d have told me at the start of 2020 that I would be finishing out 2021 as a floral designer with my own business, I would have never believed you. Before working with flowers, I was in politics & I definitely was not as happy as I could have been. I was stuck in a huge rut and really confused with what the next step for me was. I had just gotten married in January and I was so inspired by the florist who did our wedding and I vividly remember thinking that I would give anything to do what she did. My mom encouraged me to go for it- I had plenty of time on my hands, so why not? I started by selling small arrangements on a Facebook group here and there. I put them on Instagram stories and hounded my husband’s co-workers to buy arrangements for their wives. I reached out to friends and did a few smaller events. Things started to take off and I realized I needed a name, and Happy was born. I wanted to keep it simple. Flowers make me happy, and I want to make others happy too. I took a leap of faith last October and quit my full-time job to follow this passion and I am so thrilled that I did.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting my own business is by far the scariest thing I have ever done, but it has been the most rewarding. Being a one-woman show can be draining at times. Not only am I the florist, but I’m the social media manager, the photographer, the delivery person, the accountant… the list goes on and on. On the surface, this job can look like it’s just a lot of “playing with pretty flowers”- and while that is occasionally true, there’s so much more that goes into it. There have been many late nights, a handful of breakdowns, and a lot more math than I anticipated (not my strong suit).

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Happy by Margaret Peterson is a full-service floral design studio. I gravitate towards whimsical and garden-style design. Mother Nature knows best and I try to emulate that in my work by creating natural and organic-looking arrangements. I absolutely love color and utilizing unique & seasonal blooms. We offer a limited amount of weekly deliveries, subscription services for the home or office, full-scale events, and workshops. My primary focus however and what gets me the most excited is weddings! Nothing makes me happier than watching a bride walk down the aisle with one of my bouquets. I am currently booking for 2022 & willing to travel! I am most proud of all of the weddings I have been fortunate enough to work on thus far and truly feel so privileged when a couple selects me for their big day.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Just start. Don’t wait. Take the leap of faith and figure it out as you go. There will never be a perfect time for anything and life is too short to be anything but happy.
