Rising Stars: Meet Tisa Jackson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tisa Jackson.

Hi Tisa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My creative journey started as a kid, loving art class. I remember thinking outside the box for all of my projects. I did continue to love art as I got older, but sadly didn’t continue art until after college. Later in life, I started working a stressful job stressful, I needed something creative to do to relieve the stress, I started taking art classes. It was amazing, and then my neighbor invited me over for a card-making class. I could not believe I could make a handmade card in 10 minutes, it was instant gratification. A painting would take me weeks to complete and a card – only take minutes. I quit art classes and begin making cards and invitations. I then opened up my home and started teaching others how to make cards. Now I’m a self-taught graphic designer, I have an online shop, I’m a DIY blogger and content creator – and I love it! I’m the colorful brains behind This Is Tisa. This Is Tisa is a stationery and gift shop as well as a creative platform. I’m inspired by color and have a passion for bright, colorful, happy designs. I’m still teaching, now virtual at Confetti University!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been slow, I’ve always considered my creative job a hobby until recently. I’ve always loved to sell items at holiday markets, crafts shows, and on Etsy. I think if I could think of one challenge it would be asking for help sooner. For a creative person, it’s always so difficult to ask for help. But I think the best thing I’ve done for my business was to start asking for help. No one will have the passion I have for my business, but there are other people who can help take your business to the next level. Also along the way, we make lots of mistakes, creative and financial, but instead of being so hard on myself, I take those mistakes and turn them into lessons learned.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
All of our items are bright, happy, and inspiring. I create stationery and small gifts. Some of our items are still handmade and others I’ve been able to design and send for printing. What we are most known for are our handmade notebooks and handmade round clipboards. Yes, they are round. And no, they don’t come with round paper, but we do have paper custom cut to fit our clipboards. These are always a favorite and people love them. Our notebooks are handmade also, using the best quality supplies I can find, we print them, punch and bind them here in my craft room – both items are a true labor of love. All the items are unique, I try to think outside the box when creating new products.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I’m in love with Instagram, TikTok and Clubhouse. When time permits, I like to listen to small business or creative podcasts. Currently on my night stand are a few books: Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes, dare to lead by Brene Brown, and Growing Boldly by Emily Ley.
