Today we’d like to introduce you to Xandria Short.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Honestly, I would’ve never imagined that I’d be doing what I am doing today. I wasn’t necessarily a “Girly Girl” growing up. I didn’t wear dresses, skirts, makeup, or jewelry. I liked to play a little rough and it definitely showed. Makeup or skincare wasn’t even on my radar then. I was a cheerleader throughout middle and high school so I would have to wear makeup to my performances. Reflecting back on those times, I remember applying the eye shadow looks to the majority of my teammates on our game days. Little did I know I was preparing myself to be a Make up Artist (MUA).
My love for makeup peaked when I was a freshman in college. Freshman year was a really tough year for me, and makeup became my way of expression. I had make up left from a prior photo shoot I had done, so one day I just decided to test my skills and go for it. I practically sat in my room everyday just creating different looks. Overtime, I started to notice my progress, and thinking “You know, I like this!” As I continued to experiment on myself, not once did I think to try doing it on someone else. One day, one of my close friends asked me to do her makeup for her birthday and that was the beginning of my freelance makeup career! I’ve had a lot of stumbling blocks along the way, but one thing that I have learned is to never give up on myself.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course not! One of my biggest struggles throughout this whole process was believing in myself. I knew what I had to offer, but I did not believe in my abilities to actually put myself out there. Gaining clientele has also been a struggle since moving here to Austin but I’ve learned to trust the process. I have a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, and I initially moved to Austin with the intent to attend nursing school. I took a huge risk moving to a new city and state where I barely knew anyone. I started my journey in Austin with a job in my field of psychology. Although my initial job when I got here was in my field, I was miserable. I completed my time there, and took some time off to figure out what exactly I wanted to do with my career. During this period of reset, I decided to fully commit to building my brand. I launched Sax Beauté Skin, and enrolled into esthetician school days later. Juggling 30hr school weeks and operating a small business is not easy, but I love the challenge. Every obstacle, every success, and every failure will prepare me for a better future.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Sax Beauté Company is a multifaceted beauty brand where beauty meets skin. I specialize in providing a flawless makeup application with a skin like finish. I strive to make every person that sits in my chair feel beautiful both inside and out. One of the most rewarding parts of doing what I do is seeing everyone’s reaction once I hand them the mirror. To know that my services helped to make their day just a little more spectacular is so fulfilling for me.
Also within Sax Beauté Company, we have “Sax Beauté Skin”, which is a skincare line created to help aid with various skin concerns such as breakouts, hyperpigmentation, dry chapped skin, oil control, and much more. Our products are suitable for both men & women. The skin is the largest organ on the body & it is important to treat it as a luxury. All products can be found at www.saxbeautecompany.com. New products are being released this month, so stay tuned!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I would have to say the most important characteristic that contributes to my success would be my discipline. To run a business, having discipline is mandatory. There will be times where you simply just “do not feel like it”, but that is when your discipline has to step in. Motivation gets you going, but discipline keeps you growing.
