Hi Kemper, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi everyone, I’m Kemper! I’ve always had a love for beautiful, delicious food, and my custom charcuterie business, Boards by Kemper, was born from that obsession. What started as a hobby—crafting charcuterie boards for friends and family gatherings—quickly grew into something more. With a little push from my family, I decided to take the leap.
In 2019, I officially launched Boards by Kemper with an Instagram account, an LLC, and a website. I posted photos of my charcuterie creations, spread the word to my network, and hoped for the best. Thankfully, the orders came flooding in! From baby showers to weddings, I was having a blast creating unique boards for all kinds of celebrations, while also building an amazing community on social media.
When the pandemic hit in 2020, I pivoted to virtual charcuterie workshops. It was such a fun way to keep the business alive and bring people together when we all needed it most. I taught cheese-cutting skills, viral trends like salami roses, and we even made holiday-themed boards. Corporate teambuilding events became a big hit too!
Fast forward to 2024, and Boards by Kemper is thriving with mostly in-person events. My bread & butter (or “bread and brie”!) is crafting large grazing tables, especially for weddings. I’m so proud of how far this business has come, and I can’t wait to see what’s next!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any business, there have been bumps along the way, and the pandemic was a big one for Boards by Kemper. Six months after launching, I had a calendar full of events, and then—suddenly—everything disappeared. It was tough, but I knew I had to adapt quickly or risk losing everything I’d built.
That’s when the idea for virtual workshops came to life. These workshops were not only a silver lining for my business but also a way to stay connected with people during a tough time. I found so much joy in teaching charcuterie techniques and connecting with my growing Instagram community.
I’m forever grateful to my family of female entrepreneurs, who cheered me on during those challenging moments. Every obstacle has taught me something, and I know this journey will keep evolving. But I’m ready for whatever comes next!
