Life & Work with Kim Cox of N. Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Cox

Hi Kim, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Over fifteen years ago my life dramatically changed course and I needed to be able to support and raise my three small children on my own. It was extremely challenging yet it is probably the most impactful and life altering course I could have ever taken. Today, it is one of the things I am most grateful for because it forced me to get right down and serious about finding a career that could be sustainable yet also passionate. I dreamed of finding a profession that I understood fully I would be needing to commit to for years, but one in which each morning I was thrilled to get out of bed and begin my day. I focused on two tenets in my search…..it needed to be purposeful and centered around service. I also knew that one thing that brought me joy was movement, using my body in different movement modalities. I loved to run and workout and dance and do all kind of sports and outdoor activities. I felt alive when I was moving and I noticed a greater sense of self and well being mentally and emotionally when movement was a daily priority. I am forever grateful for that belief.
I began my career pursuits as a personal trainer, then a certified Pilates instructor, a yoga teacher, a psychotherapeutic yoga instructor, a myofascial practitioner, a health coach, a yoga therapist and finally ending with becoming a somatic experiencing practitioner, with many other educational pursuits and ventures in body work and healing in between. Today I focus primarily on somatic yoga therapy, specializing in trauma healing.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh gosh no! Is it ever a smooth road? There were many bumps and lumps in the road. Navigating becoming an independent contractor after working for so long for other gyms and fitness facilities, finding a space that would be affordable to rent in order to branch out into owning my own business. Learning the ropes of being a business owner, constantly learning and educating myself in order to be able to offer the utmost advanced care to my clients and managing people and all that comes with that can often be challenging. But I would say the most crucial thing that I learned very quickly was that if I didn’t give myself the most vital and upmost self care, then I was going to crash and burn. You cannot serve others unless you are taking excellent care of yourself. I also learned how to draw healthy boundaries that are so important when working in the service industry.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a somatic yoga therapist. I specialize in regulation of the nervous system and trauma healing. I believe that our issues are in our tissues and that unless we address the body we will never truly heal. We have everything inside of us to thrive yet our world teaches us from a young age to constantly look to the external for soothing. It actually encourages us to disconnect from the body to the point that we no longer listen or have a direct dialogue with what is happening within us. With simple tools like breathwork, meditation, Ayurveda and yoga movement we bring our system into greater balance and then begin to be curious as to what our bodies actually need. We begin to realize that listening to the body is always the best choice and option for sustainable healing.

I also co-founded a company called STILL Yoga with a dear friend and colleague,Tylee Personett. We have developed an 8 week series of Yoga for Recovery. Relying on the same beliefs as above that we have everything inside of us for healing. Getting to know our own constitution and what we need for greater health through Ayurveda, Yoga and the 12 steps.

You also can find me teaching group classes at Black Swan Yoga, Round Rock, on Monday and Thursday mornings at the 6am and 7am time spot.

What makes you happy?
I’m not sure what “happy” actually means. I think “happy” has a very personal and individual connotation. For me I seek joy, purpose and the continual work on being comfortable in my own skin and believing in myself. But simple happiness for me would be spending time with my dogs, being out in nature, laughing with my husband and three adult children, feeling the ocean breeze on my skin or looking off the side of a mountain top. I also find joy in biting into a juicy ripe peach, cooking for others, crafting and painting and I truly love a fresh and warm homemade chocolate chip cookie. Thank you so much for this opportunity to share what is ME!🩵
