Hi Mimi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into design began with one of my earliest memories—playing on a stack of oriental rugs with my brother in the iconic ABC Carpet & Home store in New York City. I think that’s when my love affair with color and pattern truly began! From that moment, I knew I wanted to be an interior designer.
Growing up, I was fortunate to be surrounded by great taste—both my parents had a natural eye for interiors, with a classic, timeless style. My mom, a real estate investor in Florida, took me along as she transformed countless properties over the years. Eventually, I found my way to the Rhode Island School of Design, which completely transformed my outlook. RISD taught me to see the world in a fresh way and gave me the confidence to trust my taste and instincts. After graduating, I began my career in New York, working with one of the largest home textile firms. Designing and merchandising their showrooms nationwide, I fell in love with fabric, color, and pattern on a whole new level. I was incredibly lucky to work alongside and learn from some of the industry’s legends.
From there, I moved to Florida and Texas, working with luxury design firms that helped me hone my skills and style. In 2020, I launched Mimi Wittstruck Design, where I now bring my clients’ visions to life. I believe in helping my clients live brightly, creating homes that are a true reflection of their personalities and style. I’m grateful for the chance to transform spaces where classic design meets unexpected whimsy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s definitely had its challenges. Early on, I often felt out of sync with the dominant trends—while the market was leaning towards minimalist, neutral designs, my style was always more maximal, classic, colorful, and layered. For a while, it felt like I was swimming upstream. But rather than forcing myself to conform, I doubled down on what set me apart. That shift made all the difference. I started attracting clients who wanted that warmth and vibrancy but felt lost with all the design choices out there. That’s when things really started to click, and I realized there was a whole space for the look I loved.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Mimi Wittsrtruck Design?
We specialize in transforming high-end residential interiors and furnishings, working closely with clients to bring their vision to life. My process starts with textiles as the foundation, layering in details that add depth and character to each space. I bring trusted trades into the process, ensuring the highest quality and craftsmanship. Give me a white-box, boring builder-grade home, and, together with the client, we turn that blank slate into a jewel box—layered, unique, and reflective of their personal style.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
When I first launched Mimi Wittstruck Design in 2020, the timing couldn’t have been more challenging—I’d just hosted a big launch party a few days before the world shut down due to the pandemic. Overnight, the usual ways of working and meeting with clients changed dramatically, and I had to adapt fast. Remote consultations, supply chain issues, labor shortages—all of it tested my problem-solving in ways I hadn’t anticipated. Lead times for basic items, like a sofa, suddenly stretched to eight months, so I had to find new ways to keep projects on track. Somehow, we made it work by getting creative with solutions, and those experiences taught me the importance of adaptability in any business.
