Exploring Life & Business with Tyler Hefel of Fur Sure Roofing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Hefel

Hi Tyler, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a small town in Iowa, where I developed that small town sense of community and giving back. Like many, I wasn’t sure what career path to take after a few jobs that didn’t quite feel like the right fit. While catching up with a college friend who had moved to Texas, he suggested I join him in the roofing industry. With nothing but determination, a few belongings packed into my 2005 Camry and literally no money, I drove down to Austin. Starting with no experience, I threw myself into learning everything I could about roofing and construction, turning that opportunity into the foundation of my career today.

Roofing might not be the typical ‘dream job,’ but for me, it became so much more than just work. As I dove into the trade, I discovered a deep sense of fulfillment in knowing that each project brings comfort and security to families. There’s a quiet joy in helping people protect what matters most to them – their homes, their memories, their futures. Each roof we build is a chance to connect with people from all walks of life, to listen to their stories, and to leave something lasting and meaningful behind. Over time, roofing became more than a job; it became a way to give back to my community, one home and complex at a time.

My love for animals, and my dog Maya especially, inspired me to name the company ‘Fur Sure Roofing.’ A few years ago, I took a leap of faith and started Fur Sure Roofing, and it’s been the most challenging yet rewarding journey of my life. Owning a business has taught me resilience, humility, and the value of building trust. Every roof we build reflects our values and commitment to quality, community, and compassion.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, the journey has been far from smooth—but that’s what makes it so rewarding. One of the most challenging moments came early in Fur Sure Roofing’s history, during the second project I booked on my own. That week was a whirlwind of chaos. It started with a major setback: I was involved in a car accident that totaled my truck, leaving me without reliable transportation to transport all the roofing material. As the project kicked off, we encountered another unexpected hurdle—the sprinkler system at the site refused to shut off, creating a waterlogged work environment that made it incredibly tough for my crew to make progress.
Just when I thought it couldn’t get worse, a nearby brush fire broke out midway through the project. The flames got dangerously close to the building, forcing all of us to jump into action to help contain it. It felt like everything was going wrong, but despite the odds, my crew and I pushed through. We rose to the challenge, worked as a team, and ultimately completed the project successfully. That week tested us in every possible way, but it also proved our resilience and commitment to our work.
Beyond the dramatic moments like that, being a first-time business owner comes with its own set of daily lessons and challenges. Every day brings something new—whether it’s an opportunity, a problem to solve, or a chance to learn and grow. It’s a rollercoaster of excitement, struggle, and fulfillment, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Building Fur Sure Roofing has been one of the most rewarding adventures of my life.

The name “Fur Sure Roofing” is more than a pun; it’s a dedication to my dog, Maya—my best friend, motivator, and the inspiration behind our mission. With every roof we install, we’re also helping create homes for animals in need. Each year, we sponsor a kennel at the Humane Society and enthusiastically support their Rags to Wags gala, a celebration of community and compassion. One of our proudest accomplishments was spearheading the replacement of a roof for Austin Pets Alive, donating materials and labor to ensure their facilities could continue providing life-saving care. It’s projects like these that remind us why we do what we do—not just to cover homes, but to foster hope.
Whether we’re protecting a family’s home or supporting a local cause, every project is approached with purpose and pride. Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The COVID-19 crisis taught us some powerful lessons that have truly shaped Fur Sure Roofing for the better.

First – Resilience Through Adversity. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that you can’t change the past, but how you respond to challenges makes all the difference. Tough times test your ability to adapt and push forward, and we’ve embraced those moments to turn setbacks into opportunities for growth and success.
Second – The Value of Community. The pandemic really showed us how important community is. As a small business rooted in Austin, we leaned on and supported our neighbors, which only strengthened our mission to give back—whether through the roofs we build or our ongoing work with local animal shelters.
Third – Adaptability and Innovation. Flexibility became essential during this time. We had to rethink how we communicated, planned projects, and ensured safety. Embracing technology like virtual consultations and better project management tools not only helped us through the crisis but made us more efficient in the long run.
And lastly – Small Gestures, Big Impact. And sometimes, it’s the little things that matter most. Whether it was a quick check-in, being flexible with a client’s needs, or going the extra mile, we realized those small acts of kindness leave a lasting impact.

Each of these lessons has made us stronger, more connected to our community, and more resilient. They’ve ensured that Fur Sure Roofing isn’t just about great roofs—it’s about making a meaningful difference.
