Hidden Gems: Meet Tommy Marquez of El Borracho Tacos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tommy Marquez

Hi Tommy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in Fresno, CA, in 1986. I left home at age 14 and picked up a guitar to earn an income while finishing high school and graduating in 2004. In 2014, I started my first business and made my first six figures in just six months.

In late 2015, I got into gorilla marketing and blockchain technology. In 2016, I made my first impact in a city other than my own using my marketing skills to create and grow a 40,000-member illegal ridesharing Facebook group in Austin, TX. This eventually exposed me more to blockchain technology and its underlying currency feature “cryptocurrency.” I then made my first seven figures by mid-2017.

Since my entrepreneurial journey started, I’ve founded over 10 companies and have also been working on and off in the food service industry and gig economy in general. After taking a break from the tech scene for a few years, I ended up becoming a vegan chef and the CEO of a peer-to-peer hospitality staffing app called Sousflex. During this time, the idea of El Borracho Tacos was ignited.

In October 2023 I quit everything to focus on what I was calling “the next torchys but better”. Since then I’ve raised over six figures, built a founding team, and made sure our name was heard all over Austin. We now have two locations and are opening a third location by the end of October 2024.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In all honestly I do not know if smooth roads exist. I have always chosen the hardest paths purposely and I don’t regret it. If I shared every struggle I’ve dealt with I would need a whole Netflix series, but the main one I’ve experienced was just being able to focus.

Anytime I was having a hard time it was usually because of distractions I’ve let into my life or ones o created myself. Being your own worst enemy can definitely steer you off course, but once I realized it and stayed focused I was unstoppable.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about El Borracho Tacos?
I am the founder, co-owner, and C.E.O. of Viva El Borracho LLC aka “El Borracho Tacos”. We are a non seed oil Mexican cuisine that is crafted with love, and fueled by chaos that you can find currently in food trailer in East Austin. Our locations are Hotel Vegas/Volstead Lounge, King Bee, and by the end of the month Cheer Up Charlie’s.

What are your plans for the future?
We will be expanding nationwide within the next four years. We will also be launching our very own “Chaos Coin” in the somewhat near future as well. Our recent big change was our recent opening at King Bee and our next big move is opening our third location at the end of this month at Cheer Up Charlie’s.
