Today we’d like to introduce you to Regiena Mae Petersen
Hi Regiena Mae, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my journey over five years ago when I moved to the U.S from the Philippines. It was lonely and challenging time, but I found comfort in making art.
At first, art was something I did just for my mental health. But over time, I realized it resonated wiht others too. People connected with the vulnerability and imperfection in my work, and that inspired me to share more.
I started exploring different mediums focusing on creating art that tells stories both my own and those of others (mostly people I met). Recently, I’ve been working on a series called Sculptural Diary in 30 Days with 30 stories, where I use my art to share deeply personal moments.
I am currently focusing on creating sculptural pieces that not only express my journey but also bring value to others’ lives. I’ve shared sharing my process on social media, connecting with people who see art as more than a decoration but as a way to feel something deeper.
Looking back, the challenges I faced shaped my perspective and made me the artist I am today, someone who embraces imperfections and uses art to build authentic connections.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, very far from it. Moving to the US without knowing anyone was one of the hardest experiences of my life. I went through loneliness, culture shock and a sense of being completely out of place. There were times I questioned if I’d made the right decision because the isolation felt overwhelming.
Building a career as an artist has also had its challenges. There’s this constant pressure to balnce the creative side with the practical realities like marketing yourself and making a living from your work. It’s easy to doubt yourself especially when you’re putting so much of your heart and soul into what you create and not immediately seeing results.
I will say one of the most challenging part is learning to embrace imperfection, not just in my art but in myself and my journey. I realized that imperfection makes me feel more human and where connection happens.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work is based in storytelling and emotional connection. I’m an artist who specializes in creating sculptural artwork that explore ethereal and dreamy color hues. My goal is to create art that resonates on a deeper level, offering people not just something to look at, but something to feel.
What sets my work apart is the vulnerability I bring to it. I’m not afraid to show the messy, imperfect parts of life because that’s where the beauty comes from. I often talk about embracing imperfections and learning from mistakes both in art and in life. And that philosophy runs through everything I create.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the connections my art has sparked. Hearing from someone who says a piece made them feel seen or inspired is incredibly rewarding. It’s those small moments that remind me why I do this.
What makes you happy?
It makes me happy when my vision of my work comes to life. Art, in particular, brings me joy because it’s a way to express myself and process life’s experiences. There’s something magical about taking an idea or feeling and turning it into something tangible that others can connect with.
