Life & Work with Bob Zhang of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bob Zhang

Hi Bob, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
If you’ve been in Central Texas during the fall, you’ve seen it—Live Oak trees everywhere, dropping acorns like crazy, blanketing yards and sidewalks. One day, we got curious: could these little nuts be good for something more than just annoying the lawnmower?

A bit of research revealed that acorns have a long history as a food source, especially among native cultures. That got us thinking—why not try to make something new with them? After a lot of experimenting (and many failed attempts), we hit on something: roasted acorn tea. It’s rich, nutty and completely unique—just like Texas.

We’ve been sharing it with friends and family, and the feedback has been great. People love the idea of a drink that’s rooted (literally) in our local landscape. This is just the beginning for us. Like the acorn itself, this idea has a lot of potential to grow, and we’re excited to see where it takes us. Simple, local, and full of heart—we hope to share this tasty beverage with everyone out there.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As with anything new the road has been difficult. Getting people to try a brand new beverage is not easy. We also ran into a couple of years where there has been very little acorns in the local area. We have had equipment failures. The biggest setback has been one of the original partners, David, suddenly passing away 1 and half years ago. Which led to stoppage in many parts of operations. I had to make the decision to keep going with the product or just stop all together.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My main line of work is in Real Estate, as an agent and as an investor. We do housing rehabs and buy and hold rental management. But my original work was in alternative medicine, acupuncture and herbal supplements. I still manage a clinic in southwest Austin. I am always interested in healthy living and natural treatments.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was always very creative in personality but analytical in process. Love to joke around interested in the arts and reading. In my spare time likes to visit museums and read and watch shows about history and philosophy.
