Rising Stars: Meet Tylah Blaize of Austin, Texas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tylah Blaize

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My interest in photography and videography stemmed from wanting to be an actor in high school believe it or not. I’m a huge movie and tv fanatic and saw myself in that world, that was my dream. I quickly gave up on that dream when I went to college to be an EMT, but while taking classes I found that I wasn’t very interested in the classes I was taking and wanted to do something more creative with my life. The next semester I changed my major to Radio/TV/Film and then I felt something click; THIS is want I want to do, I want to be the person behind the camera creating things I love seeing.

I told my parents what I planned to do with my life and they were pretty supportive, even though I’m not completely sure if they thought it would work out or if it was just a phase. My dad bought me my first camera, a Canon camcorder which I still have placed on my bookshelf in my office, and a few years later I bought my first SLR camera to take photos.

At the time I was working at Best Buy, taking photos and making music videos for local artists for free just trying to get better and better at achieving my dream. One day I was asked to shoot video for a wedding, my first real paid gig that wasn’t for somebody I already knew. It was very nerve-racking but I did the best I could and realized that maybe this could all work out for me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road hasn’t been the easiest to go through. As a freelancer you never know where the next job is going to come from or if it even is going to come at all. There are days where I struggle to find any reason to continue and think about going to get a “real job”, and there are days where everything is going better than I could ever imagine. There are always going to be ups and downs but I believe that if you love what you do and put in the effort, things will just fall into place even when you least expect it.

I honestly wouldn’t be in the position I’m in right now without the friends I’ve made that helped me follow my dreams. I appreciate them more than they will ever know.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I would like to think of myself as mainly a videographer that specializes in event videos such as weddings, quinceaneras, etc. Lately though I have been branching out into real estate and more commercial work. But the work I am most proud of as of late are my concert photos, as a huge fan of music I have been able to work with music artists and document them in their element and that resonates with me.

What sets me apart from others is that I like to have fun when I’m on a shoot, I feel like apart from being a photographer, my job is to make a client comfortable and feel like they have made a new friend in me. My thought process is if you’re not having fun while taking pictures or shooting a video it will make the final product significantly worse.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something people that work with me don’t usually know is how meticulous I am when it comes to my craft. It could make my job a lot easier to copy and paste every shoot and do the same thing I’ve done with previous clients over and over. But I always try something new every shoot so that every video or every photoshoot has at least that one thing that hasn’t been in anything I have done before.
