Meet Lauren Licarione of Leander

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Licarione

Hi Lauren, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started working in video production when I was a student at Texas A&M University. One day, while reading an article in the on-campus magazine, I stumbled upon a feature about the director of the Video Lab (now called 12th Man Productions). At the end of the article, there was a call for people who liked sports and enjoyed working behind the scenes to come interview for a job. Intrigued, I decided to take a chance and apply. I had no formal experience, but I was eager to learn, and my passion for making videos was enough to get me through the door. To my surprise, I was offered the job. The Video Lab team taught me everything I needed to know—from the technical aspects of film production to the art of editing and producing highlight films. I was even involved in broadcasting live events.

After college, I felt a strong pull toward the non-profit sector. I wanted to use my skills to make a difference, so I began photographing and filming for various non-profits around the world. It was fulfilling work—capturing the stories of people and organizations making a positive impact. But the reality of the industry soon hit: it wasn’t the most lucrative path, and I found myself needing to find additional ways to support myself. Around that time, friends began asking me to photograph and film their weddings. I was hesitant at first, not sure if this was the direction I wanted to take, but once I experienced the joy and meaning behind capturing such a significant day in a couple’s life, I was hooked. I loved the idea of preserving those fleeting moments and telling a story that would be cherished for a lifetime.

At the same time, my sister, who was working as a bank teller but had a passion for photography, was also looking to transition to a creative career. We realized we could combine our strengths and decided to start a business together. In 2013, we officially launched ML Photo & Film.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting our own business was undeniably intimidating! There were so many unknowns, and at times, it felt like we were crazy for even trying to make our business work. But despite the fear, we both felt a deep drive to pursue our dreams. That drive came from the values our parents instilled in us. They taught us to be resilient, to keep pushing forward even when things felt overwhelming. It was that unwavering belief in ourselves that really gave us the courage to start ML Photo & Film.

The biggest challenge we faced early on wasn’t the creative side, it was everything else that came with running a business. We were both passionate about photography and videography, but the reality of business ownership involved a steep learning curve. There were the logistics we hadn’t anticipated: marketing our services, learning how to do taxes, writing contracts, and keeping up with the endless paperwork. It felt very overwhelming at times learning how to run a successful business. Nowadays there are a lot more resources for individuals starting a photography/videography business!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a wedding photographer and videographer, and I specialize in telling couples’ unique stories through timeless photos and films. Every couple has a story and I love capturing the moments that make their day truly their own. While I’ve had the privilege of working with couples all over the U.S. and abroad, there’s something incredibly special about working with couples here in my hometown of Austin, TX.

I think what sets me apart is my easy-going, relaxed attitude, which allows couples to feel comfortable and natural in front of the camera. I’m not just focused on the big moments, I’m equally passionate about capturing the small, intimate details that often go unnoticed. Like the way your grandmother congratulates you after the ceremony or the quiet, meaningful glance your mother gives you when you’re putting on your wedding dress. It’s these subtle moments that really tell the full story of the day.

What I’m most proud of is hearing from couples years down the road, telling me how much they cherish looking back at their wedding photos or rewatching their wedding film. The fact that my work helps them relive the joy and emotion of their wedding day, that’s what keeps me going.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is ensuring that couples have the best day of their lives on their wedding day and capturing every moment of it through photos and film. I’m deeply passionate about this because, when I was in high school, I lost my father to ALS. He was always the one behind the camera, recording family videos, and we have countless tapes from our childhood. After his passing, those videos became a priceless treasure. They allow me to hear his voice, relive his laughter, and hold onto the sweet memories we shared with him. This is why I believe so strongly in the power of capturing moments because they become a way to preserve the love, joy, and connection we share, long after the day has passed.
