Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcela Homrich
Hi Marcela, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Marcela Homrich. I am a Brazilian born artist.
I grew up in an artsy and messy environment. A have 3 brothers and my mom was an art teacher and sculptor. In my family, any creative activity was encouraged, including reading, drawing and even painting on the walls.
I’ve always had the need to be creative. From all the materials I used to play with, my favorite has always been paper. I used to make paper dolls, paper sculptures and collages.
I got a degree in communications, which encompasses a wide range of potential career paths. My favorite subject was always graphic design. I had a few jobs as a designer after graduating but I always had a feeling that I was not suitable for any of them. I never liked rigid processes and I also never enjoyed working with a group of people. I have always loved to work alone, having control over my workflow. And mostly, making choices without needing to consult other people.
I then decided to start a stationery business in São Paulo. I used to sell cards, art prints and a few other paper goods to paper boutiques. In 2011 I got married and moved to the US. With my first child on the way and a lot to learn about a new culture and business I then decided to slowly phase out by business in Brazil and focus solely on the US market.
And now I am lucky enough to run my own studio and shop in Austin, Texas. I enjoy creating new products inspired by what I love most: colors, textures and shapes. I’m a fan of the freedom-based creativity. My approach is experimental, playful and often explores a range of multimedia processes.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was never easy. Having my own business while also being a parent is big challenge; it requires constant coordination with my partner and the kids demand a lot of mental and physical energy.
It takes years for a new business to to achieve sustained success, and the path to get there in not linear. I think that navigating the initial, uncertain times is the most difficult part.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I enjoy creating new products inspired by what I love most: colors, textures and shapes. I’m a fan of the freedom-based creativity. My approach is experimental, playful and often explores a range of multimedia processes.
I am currently working on 2 different bodies of work: Textiles/Embroidery Pieces and Art Prints. All my practices are informed by my background as a graphic designer.
When creating my textiles, I feel like I am drawing with yarn. I love interlacing the yarn into different shapes and mazes of colors. My textile work is normally geometric, detailed and vibrant.
I also created and am currently selling a few collections of limited edition art prints. They are normally abstract and intuitive compositions that tell stories through the interplay of shapes and colors. My art prints are angular and often geometric, with little ornamentation and a lot of color contrast.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t waste your time trying to please everyone.
Caring too much about opinions of others can impair your ability to make decisions based on your own business and creative goals. With time, patience and consistent work, you will find people who actually align with your values and are more likely to buy from you.
Don’t be afraid to fail
I’ve been experienced both failure and success. And it doesn’t matter, because both success and failure are merely indications of how we are going, what we need to change or adjust. They are not statements about who we are. Just keep paying attention to your market and adapting.
