Today we’d like to introduce you to Selma Mijares

Hi Selma, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My Journey: From Eagle Pass to Austin, Chasing Dreams
I grew up in Eagle Pass, Texas, a small border town next to Mexico. From a young age, I developed a deep love for academics, modeling, and faith—three passions that have remained constant throughout my life.

During high school, I was in the top 5% of my class, crowned Miss Eagle Pass, and actively served in my church community. Leaving my hometown to attend The University of Texas at Austin—my dream school—was a deeply personal milestone. My father, a first-generation college graduate from UT, worked tirelessly to provide me with the opportunity for a quality education and a better life, which further fueled my desire to follow in his footsteps.

At UT, I pursued a degree in Advertising, ranked #1 in the nation, with a Business Minor. I also earned a Digital Marketing Certification through UT’s 18-week intensive Bootcamp and later expanded my skill set with a Website Design Certificate from We Rock Digital Marketing. After graduating in 2024, I was accepted into the prestigious Master’s in Marketing program at UT Austin, ranked #2 in the nation, where I am currently set to graduate in Spring 2025.

As I near graduation, I am actively seeking a career that aligns with my passions, in a positive and dynamic work environment where I can truly make an impact.

Beyond my academic and professional journey, modeling has been an exciting part of my life. I have had the opportunity to model for Viva Day Spa and collaborate with brands such as Express, Prada, Hollister, and others. I truly enjoy modeling and remain open to more opportunities in the industry.

My faith has deepened since moving to Austin. I met my boyfriend in a church setting during college, and together, we have grown spiritually—attending services, doing Bible study plans, and volunteering.

My story is still unfolding, but I strive to be an example of a Hispanic woman who left her border town to chase her dreams—embracing every opportunity and making the most of this journey.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overcoming Challenges: Growth Through Faith, Adaptation, and Staying True to Myself
No, my journey has not been a smooth road. When I first arrived in Austin, I spoke differently from my professors and peers—what I like to call Eagle Pass lingo. Growing up on the border, Spanglish was a way of life, and suddenly, I found myself surrounded by people who spoke perfect English with advanced vocabulary. I often felt unworthy of being at UT compared to those who seemed more polished in their speech.

During my first year, I kept a note section in my phone filled with words I didn’t understand from professors and classmates, looking them up later after nodding along as if I knew them. Sometimes, I would even go to the restroom to search for correct pronunciations because certain words were said differently back home. I was once told to fix my pronunciation to sound more educated, which stung but also pushed me to grow.

Despite these struggles, I embraced the discomfort, knowing that growth comes from stepping outside of my comfort zone. Now, I can proudly say that I have a stronger vocabulary and excel in public speaking. In fact, I became Capstone President in my senior year and delivered a campaign pitch to industry professionals, UT professors, and students. What was once my greatest weakness has become my strength, and I am excited to keep improving.

Staying True to My Values in Modeling
Modeling also came with its challenges. I had to turn down amazing opportunities that didn’t align with my values. While I love modeling dresses, shorts, and don’t mind showing a little skin, I choose to avoid overly explicit shoots due to my Christian beliefs. I firmly believe that beauty and confidence do not require revealing too much, and I strive to be a role model for young girls from Eagle Pass and my new audience in Austin.

Everything I do is with intentionality, good taste, and the goal of spreading love and positivity.

Faith and the Challenges It Brought
Being a Christian has also come with its share of challenges. It sometimes meant losing friends or not being invited to certain events, as I don’t drink or party. It also meant walking away from potential relationships because I wanted a boyfriend who shared my love for God.

Although these challenges were difficult, they ultimately led me to the right people—friends who love me for who I am, whether they share my beliefs or simply respect our differences. And, of course, it led me to my Christian boyfriend, who supports and strengthens my faith.

Looking Ahead
The obstacles I faced have shaped me into the person I am today. I’ve learned that adapting doesn’t mean changing who you are—it means growing into the best version of yourself. I’m grateful for the lessons, the struggles, and the strength I’ve gained along the way. My journey is still unfolding, but I remain committed to faith, personal growth, and inspiring others to chase their dreams—no matter where they come from.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Bridging Creativity and Strategy: A Marketer Ready to Make an Impact
With a degree in Advertising and a Master’s in Marketing—both from The University of Texas at Austin—I bring the best of both worlds: I am a storyteller and strategist, creative yet analytical, innovative yet methodical.

I have a deep passion for all aspects of marketing, whether it’s digital, analytical, or creative. At my core, I am a natural leader, an engaging presenter, and a strong communicator. I take pride in my ability to craft compelling narratives, build meaningful customer connections, and deliver data-driven insights that drive business success.

One of my greatest interests lies in color theory and branding—how color palettes evoke emotions, define identities, and shape brand perception. I also believe that relationships are the foundation of everything—without genuine connections, even the best marketing strategies fall flat.

I am rich in education, knowledge, and passion, and I am ready to make a meaningful impact in Austin, Texas. With my graduation approaching in Spring 2025, I am excited and eager to bring my expertise, creativity, and leadership to a dynamic team.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
A Favorite Childhood Memory: Six Flags Adventures
One of my favorite childhood memories is going to Six Flags with my family. My dad and I would take on the scariest roller coasters, while my mom and sister waited for us because they were too scared to join. After an adrenaline-filled day, we’d stop by McDonald’s for a meal before heading home to go swimming—the perfect way to end the day.

We did this often, and those moments became some of my happiest memories. I’ve always loved rides, food, and swimming, and looking back, those simple yet exciting days remind me of the joy of family, adventure, and togetherness.
