Conversations with Amber Rose Stuhldreher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Rose Stuhldreher

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all started when I got a crimper for Christmas when I was 10. lol, I grew up as a salon brat and always had my hands in some sort of product. When I moved to Austin in 2004 I started doing make up gigs when I finally convinced my dad that the hair world was meant for me. I’ve been licensed since 2008 and actively behind the chair since. With that said, I’m here today because of my perseverance, dedication, skill, and love for the clients. It’s has not been an easy road, but ultimately it has been the most satisfying.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all, when I graduated the 2008 recession hit, so I struggled with finding a good assistant position that also allowed me to pay my bills. I feel like I’ve started over numerous times, and I felt at my peak when I had my own studio and my following was growing thanks to Instagram, just to have life hand me the worst. When your personal life goes sour it’s hard for your professional to stay up, I went through a lot of trauma and abuse while caring for my 4 year old at the time- So my business was not my top priority. 6 years later, a pandemic and a finding my footing I’m in a better place than before. My clients that I’ve had for 10+ years had been through it all with me, I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. And I am forever grateful for them honestly.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a hairstylist and a small business owner, I would say I specialize in coarse/textured hair cutting but I am a jill of all trades. I’ve been doing extensions the last year and have really been having fun with it, it feeds into my OCD! 😆 I love doing everything though, with the amount of years I’ve put behind the chair. I was volunteering at a retirement community last year doing hair in their little salon, honestly, it’s something that I miss dearly. Creating beautiful hair is great but what I really specialize in is connecting with and making others feel good about themselves, no matter their age, background, hair type. I feel the industry has been leaning one way with the clientele they desire, which to me is pretty snobby – getting your hair done is a treat for all, not just those that can afford it or have a certain aesthetic.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
My ability to connect with the client, also I’m pretty funny. 😆
