Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Edson
Hi Kelsey, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When I was 17, I took a graphic design class and knew it was what I wanted to do. After 14 years of doing freelance work, it started to become difficult to get a job so I decided to start doing graphic design for art purposes again. The Emo Alien began with hand embroidery and digital prints, but in June 2024, I acquired a laser cuter. Now I am spending each day wood cutting my own designs and hand painting each piece.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been an interesting journey so far. Austin has such an incredible art scene, but that also means it’s over saturated. Markets are very hit or miss, but I have met some of the most amazing artists that go through the same difficulties. The life of an artist is a daily grind.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My specialty is weird hand painted wood cut art. Less than a year ago, I had never even thought about my art in wood form and now that’s how a majority of my days are spent. The wood cut magnets and earrings are definitely my bread and butter at this point. I’m excited to keep discovering what more I can do.
How do you define success?
Sometimes success is having a productive day. Sometimes it means a $300 whole sale orders. Sometimes it means vending at a big music festival. Although I have not seen a ton of financial success yet, I am very proud of how far I have come and I see that as success.
