Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley & Derek Law.
Hi Haley & Derek, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Slackers Brewing Co. started with the idea of creating a laid-back, welcoming space where people could spend quality time with friends and family, build community, and not take life too seriously. When co-founder Derek Law began homebrewing, that idea grew to include delicious beers made in-house. The dream expanded further when Derek and Haley met and started their family. Now, Slackers is a family-friendly place where folks from all walks of life can meet, mingle, enjoy quality beverages—including coffee and non-alcoholic options—and take a break from the day-to-day in a fun and relaxing space. Today, we’re proud to be more than just a brewery—we’re a community hub where everyone’s welcome to grab a pint, try something new, and embrace the slacker lifestyle.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road—starting a brewery is as challenging as it is rewarding! In the early days, we faced the typical struggles of any small business: navigating permits, perfecting recipes, and stretching every dollar to turn our dream into a reality.
Balancing family life while running a growing business has also been an ongoing challenge, but it’s one we embrace with a lot of love and flexibility.
Through it all, our passion for good vibes, and great people has kept us moving forward. Every challenge has made us stronger and more connected to the incredible Slackers community we’re so proud to serve.
We’ve been impressed with Slackers Brewing Co., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Slackers Brewing Co. is a family-owned brewery dedicated to craft, creation, and inclusivity—a brewery for everyone. Our mission is simple: to make craft beer approachable and adventurous while creating a space where all people can gather and feel at home. Whether you’re here to sip a pint, grab a coffee, or even sneak in some remote work (we won’t judge!), we’ve got you covered.
We’re especially proud of our flagship and crowd-favorite beers, brewed just a few steps from the taproom by co-owner Derek Law. Regulars rave about the smooth, golden finish of Beachcomber, our Belgian Blonde, and the rich, creamy pour of our Milk Man Nitro Stout. Fans of wheat beers love Heffalump, our refreshing Orange Peel Hefeweizen, while lighter beer enthusiasts can’t get enough of the crisp and easy-drinking Stretchy Jörts Kölsch. There’s truly something for every palate.
Our beers are staples at Slackers, crafted with care and designed to be as laid-back and enjoyable as the brewery itself.
As parents, we know how important it is to have spaces where the whole family can truly enjoy themselves. That’s why we’ve created a comfortable, community-focused space in Anderson Mill, complete with an indoor kids’ area, a foosball table, and a dedicated mother’s room.
From our house-made craft beers, coffee, and non-alcoholic offerings to our fun events like live music, pop-up mobile bookstores, artist markets, and weeknight gatherings, Slackers Brewing Co. is more than just a brewery—it’s a place where great company and great times meet.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What we love most about Austin is its energy—there’s just something special about the way this city blends creativity, community, and a laid-back vibe. It’s a place where live music, amazing food, and diverse people come together, and we are here for that! We’re especially inspired by the small-business spirit here. Austin loves to support local, and we’ve felt that firsthand through the incredible Slackers community.
As for what we like least? Let’s be honest—traffic can be a bit of a buzzkill. But we think of it as an chance to listen to a great podcast, or vibe to one of the great local radio stations (shoutout to KUT/KUTX). Austin’s challenges just remind us how lucky we are to live in a place that so many people want to be part of!
