Hi Madison, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello, I am Madison Popwell. Owner and operator of Sugarfluent Bakery. I started this business in 2019 as a way to share my passion of baked goods and art with my community. I call myself “Sugarfluent” because I offer drop cookies, cupcakes, brownies, and treats of all kinds. I took a leap of faith and started creating and testing recipes to sell after growing up with a love for cooking and baking. I used to watch solely the food network as a child/young adult and am completely self taught. I went to school and got my degree in Economics and Business Administration because I’ve always known I’d be an entrepreneur. Now I offer custom orders, pre sales for holidays and run a cookie cart once a month all from my home based bakery in Buda! I’m truly so happy to be able to do something I love and not only sell sweet treats but the feeling of love and thoughtfulness that others get when giving and receiving such a special and unique edible piece of art!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. The business of baked treats is somewhat of a “luxury” good. Not everyone agrees that it’s a need, or wants to shell out a ton of money for something you’re going to eat. I do everything myself from communicating with potential clients to accounting, and clean up! It’s quite a lot of work to make an order from start to finish and if I don’t price my products properly I am losing money. People don’t realize the amount of time and effort that goes into this and often try to order things last minute and then don’t want to pay premium prices for a premium product. It’s been difficult to make a name for myself and not get discouraged but I always remind myself that not everyone is my target market and that’s okay! It’s also a game of ebb and flow. Holidays are especially busy. So when most people want to be spending time with family is usually when I’m working the most! It can be very challenging to not have a steady stream of income and orders are not guaranteed so there are always slower months. I know I will never be “rich” from this type of work but what makes it all worth it is seeing the joy I share with others when I create something not only beautiful but delicious!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I run a home based bakery in Buda. I specialize in custom artisan decorated sugar cookies and cakes for any and every occasion! I’m particularly known for my custom decorated sugar cookies but with the name “Sugarfluent” I don’t shy away from any sweet treats and like to offer a range of different desserts. I also run a cookie cart once a month in my driveway as well as participate in the occasional market. I am so proud of the artistry of my work. People are always amazed by what I am able to accomplish using icing!

What matters most to you? Why?
What truly matters most to me is being able to do something that I love and being a part of my community and people’s special life moments. I have been able to create for everything from baby showers and weddings to birthdays and holidays and everything in between! It’s so special having repeat clients and watching them get engaged, then married, then start a family and watching their babies grow all while getting to create for each of those life events. It is magical to be apart of and I am thankful for my customers and community for all of their support.
