Hidden Gems: Meet Christopher Gates of Atlas Head & Spine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Gates

Christopher, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I arrived to the clinical part of chiropractic school, I realized pretty quickly that patients were returning with the same issues over and over and traditional chiropractic wasn’t addressing the cause. As I explored different techniques I learned of a specialized form of spinal adjusting called upper cervical. Upper cervical chiropractic had been around since the mid 1940’s and when utilized was clearing and resolving spinal dysfunction all throughout the spine and lasting for months to years at a time from one adjustment. This way of addressing the spine led me to the technique I have been studying now for 13 years and practicing for almost 10 of those. The technique is called NUCCA. The primary reason why traditional chiropractic doesn’t last and you have to return over and over is because it simply does not change the structural position of the body. If a person with low back pain walks into a traditional chiropractors office and their pelvis is unleveled and has a short leg. Traditional manipulation will create mobility, reflexive change and decrease the muscle tension but because the hips are crooked and moving around under pressure of gravity, the issue will return and take you back to the chiropractors office. The long term correction is made by leveling the pelvis and leg lengths which comes by changing the signal from the brain stem into the muscles of the back. This is how we make a permanent change. The body’s position in space is controlled by a nerve signal from the brain stem. Just like your breathing right now which is also controlled by areas in the brain stem that does not require conscious thought. It’s dependent upon a proper nerve signal and reflex arc that comes from the nerves at the base of the skull. And this can be achieved on the patient’s first visit in our office.
After graduating from chiropractic school I spent 4 years in Tomah, Wisconsin specializing in this technique and then moved to Austin to open my own practice Atlas Head & Spine.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I opened my practice during the Covid pandemic and I did not know a single person when I arrived. I’ve now seen at least a few thousand patients and continue to grow without any marketing. I believe that God guides with a sense of peace. Even when I have encountered struggles. I have also been accompanied with a feeling of peace. I am meant to be in Austin, Texas practicing NUCCA chiropractic and serving every single patient that shows up to my practice to the best of my ability. And I will continue to show up if God allows me to.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Atlas Head & Spine ?
We are the only NUCCA office in Texas with this specific training from Dr. Matthew McNally of Wisconsin. We specialize in a chiropractic technique that is focused on correcting the structure of the spine to alleviate spinal conditions on a long term basis. We are known for state of the art spinal corrections and compassionate care. We truly love our patients and take care of them like our own family. I would like readers to know that if they have suffered from spine related conditions that continue to return or have never resolved themselves even after surgery. There may be a foundational problem that is causing the problem and it can be possibly helped.
