Life & Work with Aaron Stephens of East

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Stephens

Hi Aaron , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My musical journey began in junior high as a drummer in my church band. After a year of drumming, I transitioned to guitar and started composing my own songs. Growing up, I was deeply influenced by the soulful sounds of artists like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Aretha Franklin—music that filled our home and shaped my early musical identity.
As I delved further into the guitar, my grandfather and uncle gifted me some blues albums, introducing me to iconic figures like Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, and B.B. King. Their mastery of the genre captivated me, and I soon sought out more music on my own. This led me to discover guitarists such as Derek Trucks, Ry Cooder, Ben Harper, and Robert Randolph. Inspired by their innovative styles, I developed a passion for slide guitar and, eventually, lap steel.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t believe a smooth road exists, especially for artists. It’s the challenges and struggles that drive us to pour ourselves into our work, creating pieces that resonate and inspire others to do the same. Personally, I’ve faced my fair share of trials—whether it’s losing friends and bandmates due to the demands of the business, or navigating the shifting landscape of the music industry, particularly with the rise of social media. These challenges are part of the journey, and I’ve come to realize that there’s no real end to them. It’s through these struggles that we evolve as artists and continue to find new ways to connect with our audience.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer. My focus is on embracing who I am and blending my skills to create something that is uniquely my own. One of my greatest passions is playing lap steel guitar, an instrument not often seen in modern R&B. I’m eager to explore its potential and incorporate it into my music as a way to distinguish myself and bring a fresh sound to the genre.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Family is the most important thing to me. They’re the ones who are there when the show ends, providing unwavering support. They also know me for who I truly am, beyond the stage and the spotlight. Their presence and understanding are what ground me, and that’s something I deeply value.
