Hidden Gems: Meet Betty Chowell of Betty Skin Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Betty Chowell

Hi Betty, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am originally from Mexico, where I graduated as a Dentist. My career in dentistry led me to an unexpected but life-changing encounter with my husband. It was love at first sight, and after four years of long-distance, we married, and I moved my entire life to the United States. Leaving behind my dental career, I had to reinvent myself and embraced an exciting new opportunity in Hispanic radio as a On air Personality—a dream I had always harbored since I was young.

I worked in broadcasting for several years with Univision and Emmis Radio, which allowed me to get to know Austin and its surroundings in depth. Alongside this, I decided to open my own business, continuing to work closely with people, much like I had in dentistry. In the process, I discovered my passion for skincare, and after learning about the career of an Esthetician, I decided to take on a new challenge. I completed my studies and obtained my Esthetician License and complete my training as well as Professional Laser Hair Removal, ultimately opening my own studio.

For the past eight years, I’ve embraced my new role as a business owner and a solo Esthetician with Betty Skin Studio. It has given me the incredible opportunity to help people feel happy in their own skin, highlighting their natural beauty. I absolutely love what I do and enjoy every facial, which brings a sense of peace to my clients. Over time, I’ve developed strong, beautiful relationships with my clientele, witnessing their skin improve and their confidence grow. Whether it’s controlling acne or reducing dark spots and improving skin texture, seeing their transformation is truly rewarding.

Betty Skin Studio has been one of my greatest achievements on my journey in this country, and it fills me with pride to know I’ve touched so many lives. I feel completely fulfilled and happy, knowing that I can connect with people and help them feel their best.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has not been easy. Moving from one country to another, with different customs and an entirely new language, was a huge challenge. Facing the reality that I couldn’t practice my profession as a Dentist in the United States and knowing I would need to re-study everything was truly devastating. But I made a decision: nothing would stop me. First, I had to overcome the language barrier. Studying and practicing English became essential to my development.

Learning to navigate life in this country was crucial, and I owe much of that to my work in radio. It gave me the opportunity to attend numerous events and visit different places, where I met a lot of people. It helped me not feel so isolated, being so far from my home country and family.

After completing my Esthetician studies, it wasn’t easy to take the leap and start my own business. Taking the risk and starting from scratch was daunting. But fortunately, my hard work and dedication paid off, and my business grew much more than I expected. However, like many small businesses, COVID-19 had a major impact, forcing me to close for a while. But when we were allowed to reopen, I gave it another shot, and today, more than ever, I feel that my business is stable and thriving.

Of course, as a business owner, there are always ups and downs, but as long as I can continue doing what I love and my clients keep coming back, Betty Skin Studio will remain for many years to come.

We’ve been impressed with Betty Skin Studio, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have my skin care studio located in the heart of downtown Round Rock, and I absolutely love it because it’s a place that is always full of life. I specialize in a wide range of facial treatments, each tailored to meet the unique needs of my clients. I address issues such as acne, skin texture, dark spots, as well as the ongoing care needed to maintain youthful, radiant skin. I work with both women and men because, as long as you have skin, there’s always a need for a facial.

For me, competition doesn’t exist. There are many estheticians in the area, and I know there are plenty of people around as well. I firmly believe that a special bond forms between the client and the esthetician. A client must feel comfortable with you during their facial; if they don’t, they’ll seek someone else.

My clients often say that I give them a sense of calm and confidence, and they leave with a phenomenal glow on their faces, which brings them back. What keeps them coming back is the visible results they see from my treatments. I truly enjoy watching my clients relax while I work on their skin and create magic with my hands.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
More than luck, it’s about hard work, perseverance, and believing in myself, all while having the unwavering support of my two greatest loves: my husband and my daughter, who has always believed in me.
