Today we’d like to introduce you to Rhea Rose
Rhea, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my business about a year after graduating high school. I was a very artistic child, drawing celebrities for fellow students, building little houses and sewing clothing. However, I was determined to be a doctor and I graduated high school with a full scholarship to study veterinary medicine at Tuskegee University.
But when I found out I was going to be a mom I wanted to stay at home like I had seen my mother do. Shortly after I became restless and began creating portraits for friends and family.
This seemed like the path for my life after much deliberation. I could pursue this career and be very present at home. It was also far more challenging for me as I was extremely introverted.
Over the last 2 decades I met artists and art enthusiasts who took me under their wings and showed me the art of mural painting, gallery exhibition, face painting, graphic design, art reproduction and teaching.
Currently I am traveling the world with my art as an mentee artist Frank Frazier and instructing marginalized youth both in and outside of incarceration.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Looking back, I can say that God placed all the right people in my life at all the right moments.
However, I had to grow immensely to get to where I am. I was very shy when I was young and insecure about my talents. A little over a decade into my career I became a single parent and was forced to come out of my shell. At that time, the max I made was $28,000 in a year. But then it was time to really become confident in my talent so I could take care of my family on my own.
My biggest challenge has been believing in myself. There is nothing like a mother’s love for her kids to conquer that insecurity.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I tell stories using soft therapeutic tones through portraits and murals to translate pain into hope . I encourage women to embrace their journey and know they are not alone.
Art is a way for me to connect to people in spite of my introversion. I share my personal experiences and everyone can relate on some level.
I want to leave a footprint on Earth where life and healing grows.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
From Covid-19 I learned to pivot.
Those who succeed in life are able to adapt to changes well. Change is inevitable.
I learned to switch some of my services to online. I was able to teach online and create videos around my art.
