Inspiring Conversations with Emmanuel Tiluscar of Off Ball Threat

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emmanuel Tiluscar

Emmanuel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The Off Ball Threat started as a vision to use basketball as a transformative tool for youth development. Founded by Emmanuel Tiluscar, the business was built on the belief that basketball is more than just a game—it’s a vehicle for life skills, mentorship, and community building.

How It Started
With a background in coaching and education, Emmanuel recognized the challenges faced by underserved youth, particularly in accessing high-quality basketball training and personal development programs. He saw a need for an inclusive space where kids could not only develop their athletic skills but also gain financial literacy, discipline, and confidence.

Growth and Expansion
Off Ball quickly gained momentum by providing training programs, mentorship, and educational support. Over time, the initiative expanded, offering:

After-school programs blending sports with character-building and financial literacy.
Travel basketball teams to give young athletes competitive exposure.
A planned training facility to serve as a safe space for development, particularly for homeschool families and youth with limited sports access.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey of Off Ball has been anything but smooth, but the challenges have only strengthened its mission.

Key Struggles Along the Way
1. Limited Access to Facilities

One of the biggest hurdles has been securing consistent gym space for training and programs. Without a dedicated facility, the foundation relied on renting gyms, which was both costly and inconvenient. This struggle is what led to the goal of renovating a warehouse into a permanent training space.

2. Funding and Financial Hurdles

As a nonprofit, securing funding has been a constant challenge. The organization operates on a modest annual budget and relies on grants, sponsorships, and donations to keep programs running.

The foundation applied for grants, like the T-Mobile Hometown Grant, to help cover renovation costs.
Fundraising has been crucial, but finding large-scale sponsors has taken time and effort.
3. Community Awareness and Engagement

Building a strong support network has been essential but difficult. Since the foundation serves underserved youth, spreading awareness and connecting with local schools, businesses, and families has required constant outreach.

Many parents and kids didn’t initially know about the foundation’s programs.
Establishing credibility and trust within the community took years of dedication and consistency.
4. Balancing Growth and Sustainability

As demand for Off Ball’s programs grew, so did the need for more resources, staff, and structured programs.

With only a small team leading operations, expanding while maintaining high-quality training and mentorship has been a challenge.
The organization has been careful about scaling at the right pace to ensure sustainability.
Resilience and Moving Forward
Despite these obstacles, Off Ball has pushed forward through passion, community support, and strategic planning. The challenges have reinforced the foundation’s mission to create opportunities for underserved youth—not just in basketball, but in life.
