Check Out Ali Telfer’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Telfer

Hi Ali, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My family and I moved from Oregon to Texas in 2013. I had been an avid knitter for the past 6 years, so the first thing I wanted to do when we arrived in Texas was to find the local fiber arts community. I got plugged into the fiber arts show, The Yellow Rose Fiber Fiesta in Sequin, and began to make friends. One weekend I decided to visit a local yarn store. When I walked in I saw the most beautiful display of speckled hand dyed yarn. Being a creative, I immediately wondered if I could do something like that. So, I gave it a try. I quickly learned that I had a natural talent for dyeing yarn. My friends began asking to buy it from me and after a year or so Savvy Skeins developed. Now my yarn is sold in the local yarn stores and I am regular vendor at The Yellow Rose Fiber Fiesta every year.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Besides the rough economy, the biggest struggle for me has been the fact that I am a one woman show. I run every aspect of my business from production, to marketing, website building, customer service, and sales. It can be overwhelming.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am what is called and independent yarn dyer, or an indie dyer as it’s known in the fiber arts community. I specialize in dyeing yarn for knitters and crocheters. I take bare undyed yarn and put color on it. What sets me apart is my dyeing techniques and methods of combining colors. It’s a lot like painting. No two skeins of yarn will look the same. Each one is its own work of art.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the diversity and creative vibes of the city. The least would probably be the roads. I have gotten lost more times than I can count.
