Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabbi Coronel
Hi Gabbi, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been an admirer of design and art. I’ve doodled since my days in classrooms and eventually found my way to Adobe Illustrator. In 2019, while backpacking and spending extended periods of time in Southeast Asia, I started teaching myself Illustrator and printing out stickers I designed. Once we found ourselves in the middle of a pandemic I decided it was time to hone in on some technical skills and go for a chance to become some sort of designer. I signed up for a full-stack development bootcamp, learned the basics of code and realized I was much more interested in creative coding/UI design. While learning these skills I saw someone on Instagram looking for a logo design and help with their website. I sent them a hopeful message and always say this was my first real client (even though it was free!). This client then referred me to more small business owners also looking for help to launch their business ideas. I found myself gravitating towards other entrepreneurs that needed creative help. I continued to enroll myself in web design courses, art classes, basically any class to help me gain more knowledge and skills. Since that first free logo project I launched MijaCreative, where I am able to become a creative partner with people and businesses that are looking for branding and web design help to get themselves started. I help others bring their vision to life and I get to share my creativity and art in a variety of ways. Its been the best and hardest thing I’ve ever done for myself.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not lol. I’ve gotten a lot of “no’s”, I’ve been ghosted, I’ve gone months with zero clients and other months when I’m fully booked. There’s been a lot of uncertainty, instability, and loads and loads of imposter syndrome. I’d say that last one has been the biggest struggle. There have been many moments of wondering what I’m doing or feeling like I’m doing something wrong for not having lines of projects waiting for me. Marketing myself and putting myself out there is where I struggle most. “Comparison is the thief of joy” – its the truest statement.
These days I try really hard to not compare myself, put less pressure on posting on social media and carve out more time to create things that bring me joy.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Graphic and Web designer. I work with people and businesses that are looking for assistance in creating a brand identity or launching a website (sometimes both). I specialize in bringing a clients vision and vibe to life. I’m known for my earthy/spunky design style and easy going nature. I pride myself in listening deeply to my clients as they share their goals, pain points and aspirations for their business. Starting a business or big project can be really overwhelming and daunting. I try my best to offer as much support and guidance throughout the entire process. Collaboration and Communication are large pillars of how working together looks like.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Just start and go for it. I would also suggest to take occasional breaks from social media. While we can get inspiration and even tips from other designers on those platforms, it can also be the place that creates the most comparison and discontent. You will attract the people that support and value you, stay authentic.
