Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordana Bennett
Jordana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been the friend with the camera, so it’s hard to say when I first picked up photography. I remember documenting my childhood with film and then using my first digital camera as a teenager. I purchased my first DSLR camera in 2015 and that led to taking portraits for friends and family, and they referred me to their friends. Eventually, someone offered to pay me and it kind of snowballed from there. I officially opened Jordana Lee Photography in 2022 and it’s continued to grow.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think every photographer I know has struggled with imposter syndrome, myself included. I spent a long time denying I even was a photographer and denying that what I was creating was art. Starting my own business to support myself and my family as a single mom was the scariest thing I’ve ever done, but it’s also turned out to be the most rewarding. I still struggle with finding a work-life balance and I am my own biggest critic – I think I will always feel like I can improve and grow as an artist and business owner.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a wedding and portrait photographer, specializing in working mostly with couples. My style is more documentary in nature. I love capturing a moment organically that preserves a memory or evokes an emotion. I’d say I’m known for observing those moments in a way that’s not intrusive. I’ve been told multiple times by clients that they didn’t even realize I was in the room or taking photos at all, and they are surprised when I still managed to deliver a gallery full of details and candid moments. My goal is always to make people feel comfortable in front of my camera, so if you’re so in the moment that you don’t realize I’m there, that’s the biggest compliment to me. I want the people I work with to enjoy their day and let me worry about making that day into art. I think what sets me apart is my ability to read people and capture them in a way that feels authentic to them.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
As a business-owner, making photography my full-time job was probably the biggest risk I’ve ever taken. I was at a crossroads in my personal life, and so it made the most sense to me to invest totally in myself. That paid off in ways I couldn’t even imagine at the time, so I’m a big fan of taking risks if you’re willing to put in the work to make it happen. I also believe in risk-taking when it comes to art. Some of my favorite photos were taken when I said, “okay, I have this idea and it might be totally dumb but if you trust me I’d like to try this.” So much of being in a creative field like photography is being willing to put yourself out there.
