Today we’d like to introduce you to Derika Kelly
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
A little about me: I was born in the Bahamas. a tropical paradise this is where I got the inspiration name Tropical from my Caribbean background as well as my love for fitness and food. At a very young age, I began running track and participating in various sports, with track being my strongest sport . This opened many doors for me, allowing me to compete internationally and represent my country. In 2007, I was awarded a full scholarship to run track in the U.S. During my college years, I earned several All-American awards, set school records and also earned the title miss internationally. After taking a break, I returned to the Bahamas to continue training, where I began competing in fitness competitions. In 2010, I was crowned Miss Bahamas Fitness, which further fueled my passion for fitness and fashion. Inspired by this experience, I decided to create my own activewear line. My goal was to design a collection that allows individuals to feel fit and comfortable, whether at the gym, at home, or on the go. Ultimately, I aim to inspire as many people as possible to stay fit and motivate them toward a healthier lifestyle while still looking their best.
My passion for fitness and culinary creativity flourished tremendously after moving to Austin, where an incredible array of businesses aligns perfectly with the community. Here, I rediscovered my love for my passions. At TropicalFit, I offer one-on-one and group classes that transform bodies into their healthiest forms. I started TropicalEats during the pandemic, a time when dining out was challenging for many. My clients frequently requested weekly dishes, and although it began as a service for them, word spread about my meal prep offerings. This led to a significant increase in demand, with orders coming in from professional football players, college athletes, and locals from Killeen, Houston, and San Antonio. With a significantly out reach I Recently, resumed Tropicalets , collaborating with events such as Austin Carnival , Afro Tech, the Spurs, and local businesses, focusing on food catering and pop-up events.
When I’m not at the gym, or kitchen I work in the hospitality industry, crafting delicious cocktails with TropicalMixs. One of my signature drinks is featured at one of the best Asian fusion restaurants in Austin, located at 1618. Whenever you visit, be sure to try my shot called “Alcohol Call You Later, can be enjoyed as either a shot or a cocktail. I have traveled across the U.S., collaborating with some of the top festivals and venues to create cocktails and memorable experiences. I’ve worked alongside events and venues such as University of Texas football games, Moody Amphitheater, ACL, SXSW, Formula 1, and Lollapalooza, among others. My story is simple: I love what I do, so it never feels like I’m working evening when I’m working.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of my biggest challenges was learning how to adjust to a different culture. I’ve learned a lot along the way and continue to learn as I go. Nothing comes easy; challenges and obstacles are what help push us to reach our full potential.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work with TropicalFit, TropicalEats, and TropicalMixes is something I truly love, so it never feels like I’m working, even when I am. What sets me apart is my gratitude and authenticity. Everything I’ve experienced in my journey is something I’m proud of; every path has helped shape me into a well-rounded individual.
What matters most to you?
What matters most is never losing myself in anything I do and always maintaining a positive mindset. Losing oneself can take control of everything you have going on, which prevents you from being the best version of yourself for your family, friends, and clients, or simply being a good human being.
