Today we’d like to introduce you to Mitch Hamblet
Hi Mitch, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2005, Eden opened their doors in Illinois founded on the principal of transforming lives through higher living standards. Eden quickly developed into the industry’s youngest and best-designed health care properties, delivering the next generation of exemplary care and offering people the utmost quality of life and freedom. As the very first Supportive Living Facility in the country serving people living with disabilities, Eden Supportive Living is not about real estate, it is about creating something that gives people the freedom to live the way they want to live.
Eden is pioneering managed care for resident’s scheduled and unscheduled needs, as well as, personal assistance in advancing people’s development on a daily basis. Done so by encouraging people to play an active role in their physical and mental wellness.
Our mission, therefore, is to improve the quality of peoples’ lives while helping them overcome any boundaries that need overcoming. We craft an environment that is accessible, one in which people can grow. A place we can all be proud to call home. We don’t believe housing for people with disabilities should feel stale. We believe care should be provided in a spirit of hospitality and love. This mission inspires us and we hope it inspires you.
Today, with 4 locations in Illinois and its first community in Texas, Eden remains committed to helping individuals overcome any obstacles that need overcoming by fostering an environment that is community-centered and accessible.
To us, Eden is a place where everyone deserves to live the fullest life possible. A place where “Everyone Deserves Equal Nobility” (“E.D.E.N.”).
We hope that the opening of Eden in Georgetown Texas will start the conversation of how we can improve disability housing in Texas and hopefully inspire the opening of additional housing and resources that our community is in dire need of
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In 2003, witnessing the hardships faced by his own family members living with Multiple Sclerosis, and their fear that one day they might end up in institutional facilities, Mitch J. Hamblet founded Eden. As a rebellious upstart to the nursing home industry they faced great opposition.
In 1987, Illinois developed the Supportive Living Program (SLP) as an alternative to nursing home care for seniors. In 2005, with the persistence of the Eden Team, Eden Supportive Living developed the first for young persons living with disabilities.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
People should know that the driving force behind Eden is to improve the quality of your life. Eden is a social community. Eden Supportive Living is not just a new housing concept. It is a lifestyle designed for people with disabilities ages 22 and older who expect a better quality of living. We offer a social, accessible lifestyle for people with disabilities to live alongside peers in vibrant and active neighborhoods. The Eden communities offer unique and engaging amenities such as a sports bar, movie theatre, taco truck court yard, coffee shop, hair salon, library, adaptive fitness center, restaurant, dog park and more.
The goal of the program is to preserve privacy and autonomy while emphasizing health and wellness for persons who would otherwise need nursing facility care. By offering personal care and other services, residents live independently and take part in decision-making where personal choice, dignity, privacy, and individuality are emphasized.
At Eden we feel that our communities would not be successful without its staff. All of its wellness personnel are licensed health care professionals. Annually, the entire organization conducts a rigorous sensitivity training to better serve people with physical disabilities. From maintenance to dining, each employee’s goal is to make available the highest level of service while honoring the resident’s right to choose how to live their life.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
