Meet Jon Yvon of Magical Design & Build

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Yvon

Hi Jon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Here’s a polished and engaging version of your story for an online magazine:

### **From Paintbrush to Blueprint: My Journey in Construction**

My journey in the world of construction began in **2013** when I took on the role of a **franchise manager with College Pro Painters** in the Metro Boston and North Shore areas. That experience wasn’t just about painting houses—it was a **crash course in running a business.** From managing challenging clients to dealing with employees who wouldn’t show up, I quickly learned the ins and outs of **sales, customer service, and project management.**

For four years, I operated in a **seasonal cycle**—working from **January to November** and then taking two months off each winter to travel. During that time, I explored places like **Costa Rica, London, and Morocco**, experiences that shaped my perspective on people and cultures. Traveling taught me that, at our core, we’re all the same, with just a few unique differences.

When my time with College Pro ended, I decided to take a leap. I **purchased a flooring business** from a local franchise owner while simultaneously launching my **own painting company.** Painting took off, but the flooring franchise struggled from day one. I found myself caught in a constant cycle of **robbing Peter to pay Paul**, trying to keep the business afloat while franchise fees drained my finances.

It took me **two years to accept that the business was failing.** The reality of paying thousands in monthly franchise fees when sales were low forced me to make a tough decision: **walk away.** When I told the franchisor I was leaving, they insisted I couldn’t just walk away. But with my car breaking down, bills piling up, and even **driving for Uber to stay afloat**, I knew it was the right move. That experience taught me a **valuable lesson in business—sometimes, the smartest decision is knowing when to walk away.**

After closing that chapter, I hit a **mental wall.** Without a car and working odd jobs just to cover rent, I wasn’t sure what my next move would be. Fortunately, I had **tremendous support from my girlfriend**, who was working as an investor in the **cannabis industry.** Together, we launched **POTLOVE**, a cannabis brand aiming to break into the Massachusetts market. We made waves with our **dinner party setups**, but in **2021, we made a bold move to Austin, Texas, during the pandemic.**

In Austin, I had to **rebuild my business from the ground up**. I restarted with **painting**, but as time passed, I noticed a growing **demand for remodeling** among my clients. That’s when I decided to **shift my focus and become a general contractor, specializing in Design & Build remodels.**

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the **importance of planning before execution**. In the past, we’d jump into projects **without a clearly written vision**, which led to inefficiencies. As someone with **Aphantasia** (a condition where the mind cannot form mental images, essentially having no “mind’s eye”), I realized how crucial it is to **map out every detail** with clients before putting **hammer to nail.**

Recently, we completed our **first major remodel in New Braunfels, Texas**, a milestone that reflects years of **growth, learning, and resilience**. From painting to flooring, from struggling entrepreneur to general contractor, every challenge has shaped the person I am today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish it had been a smooth road. The struggles I’ve faced along the way have been numerous — from **closing a business in 2019** to **restarting from scratch** in a new market when I moved to **Austin, TX.** Adjusting to how things operate in **Texas** compared to the **Northeast** was a learning curve of its own. I’ve hit financial lows more times than I’d like to admit and even dealt with a car crash at the start of 2024.*

There have been stretches of **slow work** and moments of uncertainty. But I’ve come to understand that life isn’t without its challenges — we’re here to **experience the ups and downs.** With time, those struggles don’t weigh as heavily. Every setback has taught me something, and now, when obstacles arise, I face them with a sense of familiarity and **confidence in my decisions.**

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Magical Design & Build ?
I specialize in luxury design and build remodeling services throughout Central Texas. From whole house remodels to kitchen and bathroom renovations and home additions, I offer a full-service experience that takes my clients from concept to completion.

My approach is centered on clear communication, collaboration, patience, and a deep understanding of the customer experience. I think about the full story when I take on a project — it’s not just about the final result, but about ensuring my clients have a positive and memorable experience from start to finish. I want them to have a story they’re proud to share long after their remodel is complete.

What sets me apart is my commitment to pre-construction planning. Before any work begins, I collaborate closely with clients to map out every detail through a comprehensive design phase. I don’t sign a building agreement until the design phase is completed, ensuring that both the budget and timeline are clear and realistic. This process eliminates surprises and gives everyone confidence moving forward.

I especially enjoy taking on full house remodels because they allow me to bring my full skillset and creative ideas to the table. Designing a cohesive space where every room flows seamlessly into the next is one of my favorite challenges. Flow is essential in every home — it’s what makes a space feel intentional, functional, and comfortable. I love working with my clients to ensure their entire home tells a story, with each section complementing the next.

With my experience as both a general contractor and a former painter and flooring expert, I’ve developed a well-rounded perspective that helps me execute projects with precision. I’m also proud to offer handyman and single-trade services through my sister company, Handprint Painting & Services. Whether it’s a small repair or a fresh coat of paint, I bring the same level of care and professionalism to every job.

What I’m most proud of is the reputation I’ve built for honesty, transparency, and quality craftsmanship. My clients know they’re gaining a partner who genuinely cares about making their vision a reality.

What matters most to you?
A lot of things matter to me—my partner, my kids, the life I live, and my daily routine. But above all, what matters most is the pursuit of truly living life and embracing all it has to offer. Staying grounded is important to me, as I want to navigate life with a sense of ease and calmness.
