Today we’d like to introduce you to Radha Windham
Hi Radha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started playing piano at the age of 3 and throughout my childhood I started learning different instruments. I dived pretty deep into music in my teen years and found healing, self expression, and my inner voice through music. When I turned 16 I wanted to start working in a meaningful way with the focus to share what I love with others. I started teaching music to kids in their homes after posting a few ads and everything grew from there. When my schedule was full I wanted to do more and noticed many of my musician friends working in fields they weren’t passionate in. I opened Radha School of Music in January of 2016 and starting growing my teaching team and community. In 2020 we got to move into a beautiful new building and I started building our recording studios and our programs. We now offer band programs and performance training classes for kids, teens, and adults. We work with songwriters and produce their music within our studio “Indigo Studios”. We have over 600 students and a team of 20-25 staff. It’s a been a beautiful journey and I feel we’re still just getting started.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not smooth however it’s been crystal clear on what the vision and purpose of Radha School of Music and having that clarity has made it so that I could overcome the hard times. I’ve struggled with being a strong leader (especially at a young age working with mostly people older than me). I’ve struggled with learning everything on the business end of things as that was never my strong quality. I’ve struggled with how to keep myself healthy so that I can continue to do what I do. I work on average 70 hours per week and it’s been much more than that in the past. But all these struggles really shape who I am and I have embraced them all (eventually ha!).
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a teacher, a mentor, a “dot connector” and a musician. I believe my purpose in this life is to help people connect – with themselves, their inner self, their art, with others. Music itself is a life lesson and everything I’ve learned through music has had a profound impact on the rest of my life. The discipline, the authenticity, the raw emotion, the follow through, the determination, etc. It is all shown to you through your art and through your practice. What I really love is to help others not be scared by all the emotion that comes into play when learning and playing music, rather, I help them recognize it, honor it, and work through it. And that is what my school is about – finding your own unique voice.
How do you think about luck?
I believe anyone can do anything if they truly want it. I’ve definitely been given a better life than most when I was born on this earth. However everything I am the most proud of did not come from that. It came from within me and what actions I am taking NOW.
