Daily Inspiration: Meet Craig Welborn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Craig Welborn

Craig , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Brian and I started working in construction when we were 16 years old as a summer job. Our first project was a BBQ joint on the Capitol of Texas Highway. It paid next to nothing, but it helped keep us in shape for two-a-days in August. That same GC ended up contracting with Welborn Woodworks over 20 years later on several restaurant projects. We’ve always thought that was pretty cool and kind of indicative of growing up in Austin. We learned advanced carpentry and project planning from a man named Steve Bass, while working for a custom home builder in town. We went out on our own in 2010. As they say, the rest is history

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Hell no, it has not been a smooth road. Going out on your own is incredibly hard. Even if you have a lot of cash to burn, which we had none, keeping a small business up and running through the slow times, or when things go wrong will take everything you have. We have been in some really low times, mostly financially, but our commitment to each other and the business, along with help from family has kept us going. Tough times, even losses, are not the end of things. You only fail when you decide to quit. Making it through to the other side of struggle is where you learn the most about how strong and capable you really are.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We design and build custom furniture and cabinets, commercial and residential finish outs. We also have a growing bee business called Sweeney & Sons Honey Co.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Being independent. Being original. Being FREE!
