Hidden Gems: Meet Haya of The Perfect Plate

Today we’d like to introduce you to Haya.

Hi Haya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The thought of starting my own catering business came a few years ago when my friends mentioned that they really enjoy my cooking and would be willing to place orders for their favorite dishes. I was surprised that my cooking could possibly be something of interest to the wider community and got excited at the opportunities that could come my way. However, I couldn’t start right away because I got pregnant with my daughter and mom-life of two got in the way. Then, in the summer of 2024, I decided to jump into it. Given the financial times Americans are suffering through, I wanted to provide my local community with healthy, homecooked food that was more affordable than a restaurant meal and I couldn’t be more proud of myself for the first step I took. August 29th, 2024 – my first ever order, placed by one of my best friend’s mum. I couldn’t be more grateful for the trust she put in me and how it helped kickstart The Perfect Plate. Since then, I’ve helped meal plan for numerous families and catered for several dinner parties, baby showers, tea parties, engagement parties, a very large community picnic and iftar (breaking fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan) for Masjid AlNoor (mosque) in Manor. It’s been a whirlwind so far and I’m excited to see how far the future will take me

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing is ever a smooth ride. No matter who you are, no matter what you do, you will always be faced with hurdles along the way. Cooking through the night to avoid daily distractions and divided attention is my biggest challenge. I am determined to give my children all of my attention during the hours they’re awake, hence, I wait until they’ve turned in for the night to start preparing orders. That means there are nights where I don’t sleep at all – it also means that my husband must solo-parent for a little bit while I catch up on sleep. But, even with these challenges, I choose to push through with every order and deliver the best I can.

We’ve been impressed with The Perfect Plate , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Perfect Plate is a catering business specializing in Halal, Pakistani cuisine. I started this business in the summer of 2024 with the encouragement of my supportive family and friends. From simple homecooked meals to festive dishes fit for parties and special occasions, The Perfect Plate is at your service.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I think the most important piece of advice, no matter the nature of your business, always remember to pay yourself. I recently was given this advice by a friend who owns a cake business called Cake’opedia, she said it’s very important to add your own payment in the cost of your service because you’re putting in so much physical work in, so many hours in. If it were someone else, you’d have to pay them too then why neglect yourself?
