Today we’d like to introduce you to Mutiat Ogunsanya.
Hi Mutiat, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started as a small girl from Lagos, Nigeria, who loved to cook. Growing up, I was always drawn to the kitchen—watching my mom and aunties create magic with spices, flavors, and love. What started as a simple passion slowly grew into something more. After moving abroad, I found myself missing the taste of home and started recreating Nigerian dishes for friends and family. Their reactions and encouragement inspired me to turn my passion into a business. Today, I run a catering service specializing in authentic Nigerian cuisine, bringing a taste of home to every event. It’s been a journey of growth, resilience, and purpose and I’m just getting started.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not really it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was moving from NYC to Austin, Texas, and having to start my business all over again. In New York, I had already started building a small network and a steady stream of clients, but relocating meant starting from scratch. I had to learn a new market, find new customers, and rebuild my reputation in a completely different environment. It was tough, but it also pushed me to grow, get creative, and stay focused on my passion for cooking and sharing Nigerian cuisine.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I run a catering business that specializes in authentic Nigerian cuisine, offering buffet-style service for medium-sized events like birthdays, weddings, corporate gatherings, and more. I’m known for bringing bold, rich flavors to every dish, with a focus on traditional meals like jollof rice, peppered meats, small chops and more.
What I’m most proud of is staying true to the roots of Nigerian cooking while making it accessible and enjoyable for a wide range of clients. I put a lot of heart into every event I cater, treating each one like it’s a special celebration in my own home.
What sets me apart is not just the food it’s the experience. From presentation to service, I aim to give my clients a taste of home and culture in a professional, seamless way. I also take pride in being a woman-owned, Black-owned business that’s built from the ground up with love, resilience, and a whole lot of flavor.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I’d say the most important quality that’s contributed to my success is consistency. Whether it’s the taste of my food, the way I present my service, or how I treat my clients, I always strive to show up with the same level of passion and professionalism every time. People remember how you make them feel, and I want every client to feel taken care of and completely satisfied. That consistency has helped me build trust, get referrals, and grow my business one event at a time.
