Today we’d like to introduce you to Al Gonzalez.
Hi Al, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I moved to Texas in 1987 to work with 3M, selling into Mexico. After 12.5 years and over 2 million miles flown with American Airlines, I realized I wanted to spend more time with my family. That’s when I transitioned into financial services.
I started by selling life insurance with NY Life and American General but quickly recognized that true financial planning goes beyond insurance. I earned my Series 7 securities license and gained experience at AGSI and TD Ameritrade before becoming an independent advisor. I built my practice at Waddell & Reed, then established AG Wealth Advisors under LPL Financial.
With 20+ years in the financial industry, I now lead a remote support team that helps me deliver comprehensive financial plans to clients nationwide. As a Virtual Investment Professional (V.I.P.), I provide personal advice to those looking to minimize their tax consequences, fund private education (K–graduate school), plan for retirement, and build a lasting legacy.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Transitioning from a salary-plus-bonus role to a 100% commission-based income came with plenty of sleepless nights. Selling only life insurance was tough, which led me to TD Ameritrade, where I worked on the bond desk during the Great Recession (2006–2009). It was a challenging but invaluable experience—I learned firsthand how to manage risk and build diversified portfolios. Being new to the equity side of finance, there was a steep learning curve, but it strengthened my expertise in navigating market volatility.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I help individuals, families, and small businesses prepare for and navigate retirement with confidence. With a CFP certificate from UT Austin and an MBA, I combine technical expertise with real-world financial planning experience. I’m a fiduciary.
As a small business owner myself, I understand the unique challenges of running a business—balancing growth, managing cash flow, and planning for the future. This firsthand experience allows me to guide fellow business owners in creating effective exit strategies and long-term financial plans. Advisors at big wirehouses often lack this perspective, but I know what it takes to build, sustain, and transition a business successfully.
My background with corporate benefits also gives me a unique insight into integrating those options into a comprehensive financial plan. I specialize in helping clients make informed, logical choices that reduce unexpected financial surprises and create a more secure future.
What sets me apart is my ability to blend strategic financial advice with practical solutions—helping clients not just grow their wealth, but protect it while minimizing tax consequences. Seeing my clients gain peace of mind and financial independence is what I’m most proud of.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We can start with a first appointment to discuss your goals and what financial peace of mind looks like for you. Once I understand your needs and current situation, we can determine the best path forward.
Just like seeing a doctor for a pain, a proper diagnosis comes before the cure. I take the same approach—listening carefully to understand your financial concerns and challenges before recommending solutions.
