Check Out Sydney Planka’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Planka.

Sydney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My painting journey began while attending Texas State University during the 2020 pandemic, where I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Advertising with a minor in Women’s Studies. In one of my women’s studies courses, our final project offered a choice: create a documentary, write an essay, or produce an art piece. That choice became a turning point for me — the start of a path I’ve followed ever since.

My first piece explored the woven intersections between the female form and the weight of societal expectations. That theme has remained at the heart of my work, a constant thread. I stand firmly in my womanhood, and my art continues to be a testament to both that strength and experience.

I now work primarily with acrylic, watercolor, and oil on canvas. Over time, my creative process has become deeply intuitive — unlocking what I believe are sacred gifts and transforming them into visual portals for others to experience. Each piece is created with intention, guided by visions that I receive from Source energy. I see myself as a channel, and I believe it’s my purpose to bring these unseen realms into light.

Today, I’m creating work that feels truly aligned with who I am, and I continue to learn and grow along the way. I approach my practice with curiosity and an open mind as I evolve on this path.

I’ve had the opportunity to show my work at The Price Center in San Marcos, Texas, and currently have a painting on display at Stitches Vintage, a local vintage store here in Austin. Looking ahead, I hope to expand my presence in the Austin art community and collaborate with galleries across the city.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, but I remain consistent because I know this path is what God chose for me.

I have had a multitude of struggles and would say ultimately the main challenge has been fear. For a long time, I struggled with allowing myself to be seen. I used to feel the need to dim my light, which led to hiding myself and my work. This mindset changed when I started sharing my paintings with close friends. I see how their eyes light up, and that’s what the Truth does. I remind myself that amongst the obstacles that light shines within me… and all of us.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work independently as a freelance model and stylist, collaborating with photographers, artists, and brands to create visually compelling stories. My work spans editorial shoots, lookbooks, and creative direction, where I often style wardrobe, assist with set design, and step in front of the camera. I love being part of the full creative process, bringing concepts to life through thoughtful, intentional details.

As the Modeling Director for Glaze Zine, I work closely with a team of creatives to help shape each issue’s vision. Beyond directing models, I’ve also contributed to community outreach, social media, styling, and behind-the-scenes photography and videography. Glaze is rooted in creating a safe, expressive space where individuals can feel seen and valued, and it’s been an honor to help others tap into their individuality while contributing to a project grounded in community.

I also design and hand-bead jewelry, sourcing materials from local art shops. Jewelry has been a passion of mine since childhood — my mom often gifted me pieces that were both beautiful and deeply sentimental, which taught me early on the lasting value of timeless designs. I work with a variety of beads but am especially drawn to earth-made materials. I’ll be offering my pieces online and at local markets starting this month!

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is my family, my faith, and our planet. I do what I do for all levels of my bloodline and God willing, continue in honor of those who walked before me. I hope to help clear and pave a new path for others to shine their own light.

As an artist, I believe it’s essential to think beyond myself. Through my faith, I’ve come to understand that the legacy I wish to leave behind is rooted in my love. I trust there is a higher purpose to this journey, and with each canvas, I hope to help raise the vibration of our world.
