Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Kennedy.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Art has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Both of my parents are painters, so growing up, creativity was just part of my everyday life. I’ve always known I was an artist—it just felt natural. My parents were a huge influence, not just in what they taught me, but in showing me what it means to live a creative life. I started putting my work out there in the fall of 2023, and it’s been a wild and exciting ride ever since. Over the past year and a half, I’ve been experimenting with different media, figuring out my style, and just letting the process guide me. Outside of visual art, I’m also a guitarist—music has always been the primary way I tap into that same creative energy.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been a challenging but exciting road as I try to figure out my path as an artist. I’ve hit my fair share of creative blocks, moments of doubt, and times where I’ve felt totally lost—but deep down, I know I’m on the right track. I’ve got a lot of growing and learning ahead of me, but the fact that this is just the beginning of a much bigger journey honestly keeps me motivated. There’s something kind of thrilling about not having it all figured out yet.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Most of my work is made with charcoal and oil paint—two mediums I love for their rawness and range. I’ve always been drawn to the human figure. There’s a timeless elegance in the body that I try to capture in each piece.
I’m especially interested in working with the human skeleton. There’s something really striking about the skull—it’s one of the most recognizable and iconic symbols in art history. I see it less as something dark and more as a way to reflect on time, memory, and what we leave behind. It’s been used for centuries to symbolize things bigger than ourselves, and I like tapping into that tradition while also giving it my own voice.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Music brings me a kind of peace like nothing else. As a musician, I have a natural connection to it, but my love for music goes deeper than just playing. Music is a force that taps into something beyond words—like an emotional language that lives inside all of us. A single song can bring up memories, both beautiful and painful, without warning. That’s what makes music so powerful—it’s universal, yet deeply personal. It can lift us up, break us down, and remind us of who we are. In a world full of noise and distraction, music feels like truth. It reminds me that some of the most meaningful things in life can’t be explained—only felt.
